Houghtons goal in '88 was for the 80’s anyway. I’m presuming the pelanty shootout against Romania won the 90’s one.
So the greatest sporting moment of the 80s was a winning goal in a group match between two sides eliminated in the group stages which ultimately decided who avoided the ignominy of finishing bottom of the group.
The greatest moment of the 90s was a scoreless draw in the last 16 of the World Cup, followed by advancement in the lottery and immediate elimination in the next round.
Eire soccer types really set the achievement bar very high.

Only 8 teams qualified for Euro 88. So to get there was a serious achievement in itself.
While there they beat England, drew with the Soviet Union who got to the final and lost to the Netherlands who won it.
They got to the last 8 in the World in 1990 in a sport that is actually played World wide. In contrast the Irish rugby team have never advanced beyond the last 8 in an 8 team competition.
