Excellent points by @myboyblue and @Fagan_ODowd earlier. I don’t place much, if any, store on supposed sports where you can’t be engaged physically by an opponent. Be that a direct challenge in a sport like hurling, football or boxing or even something like tennis, running or cycling where an opponent can overpower you or lay down a physical challenge. I’d therefore rule out moments in some admittedly skilled activities like snooker, golf and such like as they really don’t compare to achieving the zenith when under physical duress.

Take out 1) minority sports such as badminton, rowing and lady boxing; 2) bespoke agri-business showcases like horse racing and equestrianism; and 3) professional networking events masked as sporting activity like rugby football and there’s actually not much left aside from the aforementioned activities.

Fucking up the Rugby World Cup bid for 2023 will go down in history as one our greatest sporting achievements
