Irish Historical Heroes (Pre Civil War)

Is there a thread on this ?? If not, I’m not having this thread hi-jacked by Totti and his murderous gang of provos who terrorised old women and children…Hence, the pre civil war stipulation.

Emmet and Fitzgerald have always fascinated me and i’ve read about both many moons ago but I must revisit their stories.

There are three Limerick men who signed the declaration of independence and i’m ashamed to admit i’ve never read much on them.

Michael Collins was my hero growing up, and i’ll always hold him in high regard along with the Galloping Hogan.

Fr John Murphy
John Kelly (from Killane)

Nicholas Whittle, George Lennon and Tommy Cleary.

Hugo Oconor, governor of the Spanish state of Texas y Coahuila.
His first cousin, Alejandro OReilly was governor of the Spanish state of Louisiana around the same time.
At the time Texas included most of what is now Colorado, New Mexico and up to Wyoming and a good chunk of present day northern Mexico.
Louisiana included all the lands drained by the Mississippi River, so for two years two Irish born cousins ruled a large part of the North American continent.

Father Murphy from old Kilcormack

Admiral William Brown, buccaneer, pirate, and founder of the Argentinian navy. His life is a great story.

O’higgins the founder of Chile.

There is an O’Connell street in Madrid near the main park which I stumbled across one day. Tried to find out the back story but had no luck.

You sure that’s not just the name of a pub in Madrid bro?

I’m not sure we can claim Bernardo O’Higgins. His Irish father was the spanish viceroy (or some such title) to Peru, he knocked up a lady and refused to recognise poor Bernardo who went on to become EL Libertador.

Zorro was Irish.

I hope you didn’t hurt yourself Julio. Had you been drinking again?

I’m sure it’s a safe enough bet that I was

It was actually O’Donnell. One of the flight of the earls descendants or some such. He’s got a metro stop named after him and everything
