Did Denis Irwin ever really do it for Ireland?
He’s never really spoken about in the affectionate manner by Irish people the way United people from the 1990’s talk about him.
He’s held in great affecction on this forum anyway.

A teenage Ian Harte was keeping him out of the side around 1996 and 1997 from what I remember. Harte wasn’t exactly excelling either

Irwin didn’t bother turning up for the second leg after Paul Bosvelt went full force studs in on his standing knee the week before it.

Mad really how underwhelming an Irish career he had when someone like The Boss said he’d be the first name on the team sheet in a United XI from 1986-2013.
How was it underwhelming? He didn’t get capped until he was 24 or 25?

56 caps isn’t great for someone who was a United regular for over a decade.

Big Mick wanted Irwin to “prove himself”.
Irwin quit Ireland way too early but i suppose you couldn’t blame him when then manager Mick McCarthy told the media that Denis needed to prove himself in order to start for Ireland. Irwin was a regular for Man United at the time.
He retired at 34
