Kieran Shannon: Why Ruud Dokter's 'elite player pathway' plan is not good for...
Call for 'elite player pathway' from age 12 is too young, and could prove counterproductive, says Kieran Shannon.Ā

Nice like
Thatās āTime Magazine Man of the Centuryā Ronnie OāBrien Iāll have you know.
Iād say weāve never got the amount of players off underage teams as we have in the last couple of years. A lot of that is due to how poor the alternatives are though
Jason Gavin used to become unreal in Championship Manager
There definitely isnt a logjam ahead of them that there may have been in previous years. Its a good time to be a promising young Irish player, once theyāre handled properly.
Celtic Legend is a bit strong
No coincidence that our most decorated player of the last 20 years Sheasy, stayed back to do his Leaving Cert. The new Brexit academy restrictions should mean the lads arenāt heading over very young and getting churned up by the academy system and getting disillusioned by the game
from the team that started against Bulgaria.
Kelleher, Omobamidele, Cullenā¦ that wouldnāt be great. From the team against Azerbaijan
Bazunu and Idah.
Ogbene never got in the underage set ups.
James Mclean and Duffy came through the Northern Ireland youth setups
Robinson was an English youth international all the way up.
Before everyoneās time by the looks of it too
Out of interest how many did we get off the 2011 under 19s?
Doherty, Egan, Hendrick? Think Brady was left out of the squad for the Euros
scored a lucky free at hampden in one of our few wins over the huns at that time
he wasnt a starter on a regular basis
Bazunu, Kelleher, Collins, Omobamidele, OāShea, Molumby, Knight, Idah, Connolly, Parrott are all now when fit part of the Irish squad and all having come through Irish underage set ups in the last few years and still in their teens or early 20s
2 starters, at the most. Daryl Horgan is more trusted than some of the wide attacking options. The barrier to getting on the squad isnāt there but by jesus if Horgan is getting picked at senior international ahead of you, and you canāt do enough in training to convince the manager otherwise there is something lacking.
I didnāt say anything about starters. Youād hardly be expecting 10 20 year olds to start for Ireland. They are all now solid squad members.
Connolly is the only wide attacking player there so heās the only one competing with Horgan of the 10 I listed.
Did I read Banuzu didnāt go across either until heād his Leaving cert done also? Think its a great sign of maturity if so
Whatever happened Anthony Forde? He was seen as a prospect a decade ago, made his debut at 18 for Wolves. Think he was from Ballingarry
Quick Google. With Oxford in League 1.
Seems to be holding down a reasonable career at that level. But thatās his level Iād say at this stage

This initiative from Dokter will fuck lads down the country who have an interest in GAA. Basically forcing them to pick at 12/13 what they want to do with themselves.
Outside of lads in the cities this will fuck over everyone else. Weāll lose more than we gain from it
Itās an absolute fucking cop out. Instead of putting in place structures to get more coaches at grass roots and bringing the base standards up, itās creating elite tiers down as far as under 13ās. Narrow focused coaching for elite in cities and big towns and everyone else left behind. This will put huge pressure on parents to bring young lads to places 3/4 times a week. Unsustainable and narrow minded
