Something like that. The best thing that’s going on at the moment is that at underage we have more and more quality Irish born lads who are mostly playing in the LOI. Hopefully this kind of thing will happen less in the years to come.
The reality is if a lad is good enough he’s going to play for England and not us. This fella might end up coming back to us yet a few goals in the championship is a long way from the England team
Ive never seen the lad play but if he couldnt get a look in at Everton last summer, unless he has developed out of all recognition while out on loan, he can’t be that good.
Harry Kane, Ivan Toney and the odd few more have been late developing English forwards recently. They are just covering their bases. I’d be surprised if he is as good as Bamford.
The FAI and English born players with Irish heritage are like couples dating during the pre-contraception Catholic era in Ireland. Capping Grealish, Rice and now this Cannon fella would have been akin to pregnancies followed by forced marriages. Martin O’ Neill flacked a fair bit of blame for not “trapping” Grealish and Rice by playing them in competitive games.
I don’t know. Once you’re in a setting like an Irish camp it can become infectious. Mark Lawrenson probably felt more English than Irish but was a regular in the heart of the defence up until his injury. Very few players have voluntarily called a halt to their Ireland career after 10 caps or less bar Stephen Ireland.
