Irish soccerball nil - That boy Jinky will save us (Part 2)

He played in midfield for Ajax

Masherano and Javi Martinez started as midfielders and ended up as centre backs.

Hierro?

Jeez theres not many though is there. Given its suggested so much as an option

I wonder though, is it because players who are very comfortable on the ball are more likely to be played as midfielder on underage teams? And maybe not quite good enough at the highest level, so get re-fitted as defenders. Less likely to happen the other way as there is a glut of underage midfielders that come through.

Stevie G was a right back.

Kante was a keeper. Thats why he’s called In Goalo

Gerrard was never a right back coming up. He was just put there as a kid breaking through

That’s shocking mate, even for you

They are all terrible sure. Thats the point

Has Milner ever played centre back I wonder. He has played every other postion outfield at some stage

Laurent Blanc started out as an attacking midfielder and is still Montpellier all time top scorer

Paul McGrath, though he did play midfield for Utd too a few times.

how many games did Paul actually play in midfield?

Didn’t ya ya toure play a bit for Barca

I’d say most of his caps for Ireland?

From 92 or 93 onwards he only played centre half I’d say

at club level, sorry. I wouldn’t say he was used much there by Big Ron or Ferguson

he was definitely centre back for the 94 qualifying campaign. Big Mick and Dave-O were gone at that stage and Keane was after breaking in to midfield

Yep thats my memory too. His knees were well creaking at that stage as well

he had knee trouble before Italia 90 didn’t he, but yeah, he was managing minutes and training by then

Two goals for Stumpy Connolly today

Bazunu not starting today. Dropped or rested for the cup?

Rep of Ireland Manager in waiting Jim Goodwin’ Aberdeen got thumped 6-0 away to Hibs.
