It help

Have a pal over with a new Irish laptop. It won’t connect to to my WiFi. It just says on trouble shooting IP address not recognised, and says connected no Internet.
Is there something, other than shoving my thumb up my hole, that may fix this?

Your wireless router might be broadcasting on 2.4Ghz and the Laptop might be only 5Ghz, or vise versa. In this case he wouldn’t even see the WiFi to join it. Set your phone in hotspot mode and see if he can join that.

Edit: has he successful joined the wireless? If he has, he may have a static address on the card and needs to set it to DHCP. Google that.

Reboot Router and laptop first before trying anything else

Is 5 not a larger number than 2.4? Just curious about the use of the “only” adjective.

Google it :joy:, the ultimate answer from IT.

An Irish laptop? What makes it Irish?

Racist.

Try restarting the wireless service on the laptop. That seems to fix half the INTERNET issues I have with my current laptop.*

*Soon to be ex-laptop. Slowed to a crawl in the last week or two and took a full hour to boot earlier after the latest Windows Update. The PM helpfully suggested I “wipe all the blue movies off it”.

Decent hardware is usually dual band, both 2.4 and 5. Routers from ISPs such as Vodafone have ‘only’ 5Ghz band. The canteen you work in is probably only 2.4 (nearly obsolete) , but you wouldn’t notice as you type in the menus every day and it gets sent up to the displays.
