Italia 90 Nostalgia thread

Fucking hell…the memories…!

I was doing my Leaving Cert during it. If I recall, Ireland played England on a Monday and I had Irish that day.

Was finished by the Romania match and went into town watch the shams run amok down O’Connell St.

The night of the final was also the same night as some festival with fireworks down by the Shannon. Watched it the long defunct Buddy’s Bar in Fox’s Bow which was about the only bar in Limerick that served cans of beer at the time.

Sounds like a misspent youth but the Leaving went ok…

Was Ireland-England definitely a Monday? Scoreless bore draw with Egypt the following Sunday when Dublin defeated Wexford in the Leinster Senior hurling championship.

Fairly sure it was. Egypt game was definitely a Sunday afternoon and I think the Dutch game was the following Thursday night.

Romania game was also a Monday with the Italy match on a Saturday night.

I totally killed the Peig question in the Leaving as well!

I thought it was Tuesday?

Tuesday, June 12th 1990

Monday June 11th, 1990. 8pm kickoff British/Irish summer time.

Fuck, you’re right actually, Holland-Egypt was the Tuesday.

I was doing final mocks the week of the Holland game. We had a major session on the Thurs night anyway. The Monday session for the Romania game was mental. The country shut down and went out

jez that was a piss poor English squad

why are we told Des Walker is born in Hackney and no other players birthplace is listed!?

Don’t really think it was. Presume you’re talking in relation to squads they’ve had since. I’d say Shilton, Barnes, Gascoigne, Robson, Lineker, Waddle, Adams and Beardsley and possibly a couple more would be as good as anything they’ve had since and would all push close to making an English team of 1990-2014. Players just not as exposed or hyped as they are now.

Second Captains did a very enjoyable podcast yesterday with Simon Hart, author of a new book called “World In Motion” about Italia '90, for those who are into that sort of thing.

Some nice anecdotes there and very interesting discussion.

I was sort of aware that Bryan Robson lost a toenail in the run up to that tournament and was hampered by it in the two games he played before going home injured, but I didn’t know he lost that toenail when he tried to upend Paul Gascoigne out of a bed and dropped the bed back on his toe.

I have just bought this today. Read the first two chapters which are about Cameroons win against Argentina and England’s group stage games. England’s defeat to Germany on penalties was their first ever defeat in a shootout. Which is mad considering how many they’ve been in since. Really well written with some good contributions.
