Italia 90 Nostalgia thread

You are correct.
Outside of the excitement generated for the Irish games there were very few memorable ties.
England were in the best, v Cameroon.

I watched the official Fifa Italia 90 film on History channel this week. Some of the tackles in the tournament were horrendous. The refs dramatics were also entertaining.

England were the best team in the tournament. Awful to lose West Germany in the semi final in the lottery after outplaying them for most of the game.

Any comment on the fact that of England’s last 5 triumphs in the past 35 years in the CL/EC, only one of them was won without the aid of a method you deem a lottery system?

You’re in the wrong thread. This is the Italia 90 Nostalgia thread. Just accept the fact that I utterly demolished you on the European Cup final thread last weekend and repeatedly had to pull you up on your dishonesty in propagating blatant false facts.

Yugoslavia for me were head and shoulders best team in it. The opening result against Germany losing 4-1 was not a genuine reflection of the game and they had recovered well, beating Columbia and Spain after. Savicevic who was world class blazed over the bar against Argentina in a game they totally dominated and lost on pens.
I believe they would have avenged the German loss quite easily in the final.

They then qualified impressively for the euros only to be replaced by Denmark who won it. Who knows what effect it could have had on their people had their football team won a major tournament?

The Germans know the numbers before the draw…

English lads are a pitiful mess in shootouts because of memory and their own press

By that rationale you could argue Italy were the best team in the tournament. Lost on penalties to Argentina after outplaying them for most of the game. They had won every game up to that and Caniggia’s equaliser was the first goal they conceded in the tournament.

Italy won the third place play-off against England 2-1.

You could argue Brazil were the best team in the tournament as they comprehensively outplayed Argentina for 80 minutes, being denied time and time again by a heroic performance by goalkeeper Goycochea, until a moment of magic from Maradona won the match.

You could argue Cameroon were the best team in the tournament. Beat Argentina, Romania and Colombia, and probably should have beaten England before giving away two stupid penalties.

I wouldn’t argue any of those things though.

I though you wouldn’t comment alright as you’re a hypocrite. English clubs have a lottery system to credit for 80% of their CL/EC success over the past 35 years by your logic. Thanks for confirming.

Very little, I’d suggest. The forces which led to the war had already been unleashed by the summer of 1990.

Had none of the trouble happened though they certainly had the players to win a World Cup in either '94 or '98.

Picking a Yugoslavia team now would be a very interesting exercise. I’d say you could still make a World Cup contending team out of them if they were still one country.

Argentina were the better side against Italy sid. The Italians froze completely. It was Argentina’s only good performance in the tournament and they deserved the win in Naples that night.
Italy were functional. Poor against Austria,Eire and USA and the Czechs had them well rattled before Baggios stunning goal.

My recollection is that Italy started like a train and were certainly the better team in the first half but after half-time Argentina gradually got on top and the equaliser wasn’t wholly unexpected. After that and the extra-time was pretty even.

That was a memorable tie. You couldn’t write the script with Maradona taking on Italy in Naples. Actually both the semi-finals were pretty good.

2002 and 2010 were dreadful World Cups overall and worse than 1990.

You’re missing Lovren, Rakitic and Mandzukic.

Mandzukic is the only one who I’d be tempted to put in my lineup. Lovren is error prone. I think Pjanic and Modric are better at what they do than Rakitic.

Italy shit the togs against Argentina in that 1990 semi final.

Tg4 now

Ray could play

Old Parry Bonner was poor enough for the Italy goal.
