A posting to Crossmaglen for a British squaddie in the mid-70’s wasn’t the best draw you could get. I’m watching the mini-doc on Robert Nairac here on RTE1. The Cross diehards were a dour looking lot.
The fleadh looks like the best thing to happen to Belfast since clinton played the sax and declared a cease to hostilities. I’ll have to make an appearance. I owe it to everyone.

Ending up in Crossmaglen wasn’t good for anyone, at anytime.
I was up at the Fleadh during the week and I have to say, I came away very impressed. Maddens is a cracking spot, although you really need to get in early because the place is absolutely packed. There was trad music pouring out of nearly every pub, a fantastic buzz about the town, and everywhere you looked people were smiling. No hassle, no trouble, just a great atmosphere.
For a bite to eat, we stopped at Browns street vendors for their fish supper and I have to say, the fish and chips were something else. Proper hand cut chips and three great big pieces of fish. That kept me going for the day.
The pints weren’t cheap. They were about £6.50, which works out at around €8, so much the same as Dublin really. Expensive enough, but in fairness they’d pedestrianised so many of the streets, making it a pleasure to walk around, and there were plenty of stewards on hand, so everything was really well organised.
The sun shone while we were there, which always helps. If you haven’t been, I’d definitely recommend it. We enjoyed it so much we’re already talking about going back next year, only this time we’ll stay for two or three days and soak up a bit more of the atmosphere.
It was great to see something so positive happening up North, and long may it continue.

The DUP MP for Strangford Jim Shannon has been charged with the common assault of a woman in 2003. The beleaguered DUP are suffering nothing but setbacks with high profile members landing themselves in hot water with unwelcome regularity….
These God-fearing folk need to review their lifestyles….
