Driving up from Kerry this morning and Brendan O Connor (the cunt) had a rake of guests on telling stories about The Charlton Years. It was very enjoyable. Two main Highlights were Mick Byrne saying Ireland ā€œupset the apple tartā€ when they beat England. The second one was Dunphy describing the Footage of renowned Mayo author and journalist John Healy bursting into tears when O Leary scored the penalty. Dunphy described it beautifully. I found it very moving and had tears in my eyes driving past The Midway in Portlaoise. I told Mrs Barnes it was hayfever when she axed me.

I was at the first two home games under Jack Charlton. After them, it was hard to imagine the heights Irish soccer would get to. Wales and Uruguay. If I had to guess a 0-0 draw and a 1-0 win but I must look it up. The jury was definitely out anyway.

Dunphy ranting and throwing the pen after the 0-0 against Egypt, he was a major critic of Charlton.

Pity we didnā€™t meet up. Iā€™m in dingle.

Iā€™d say heā€™s distraught

It was funny as well when John Giles misheard Brendan Oā€™Connor and thought he said that he didnā€™t respect Jack Charlton when he actually meant that for Dunphy, and Giles was pure thick as fuck cutting across him for the next two minutes

I doubt thereā€™s anybody as fun to go on the pints with as me except for Funtime of course.

Dunphy didnā€™t try and rewrite history in fairness. He spoke about it honestly enough and had lots of nice things to say about Charlton the man.

Nah Whelan was definitely a big player in the Italia 90 qualifiers but he got injured at the end of that season and wasnā€™t fit enough to play presumably.

McGrath was moving around between full back, centre back and centre mid and Whelan played full back too. Just not sure what a first choice team would have been if all the big names were fit.

Iā€™m guessing

Bonner
McGrath Moran McCarthy Staunton
Houghton Townsend Whelan Sheedy
Aldridge Cascarino/Quinn

So Chris Morris losing out. But I donā€™t know.

Morris was a lot better than Whelan.id have him in midfield

Was Townsend really a cert?

100%. Jack loved him. He was box to box and would leave one on you
