For me Ireland’s greatest sporting moment was the 1-0 win against Italy, one of the best teams in the world then, in the 1994 World Cup.
No big man up front, a very un-Charlton like set up. Just incredible.

John Sheridan was incredible that day
Lech Poznan were an army team. Same as Legia and Wisla.
I worry about Paul. People in football will look after you, because it’s in their interest to look after you.
I think Jack’s decency is thoroughly genuine. His players loved him
Some memories
There was nothing like international football.
Was that the friendly in advance of the 1994 World Cup where we beat them?
+1
The attempts on here to drive the narrative to a football club in england is a bit disheartening.
He’s one of these weirdos that cares more about Man Yoo than Ireland
Nobody mentioned man united on this thread.
At the end of the day life is just a series of moments and experiences. Jack gave millions of us some of the best moments any of us will ever have. Magic times. RIP.
We were all part of Jackie’s army.
He probably would have refused to play after the lads had a few cans at the Vatican.
Every post you’ve had has been trying to shoehorn in a Man Yoo sooperfan narrative
Roy Keane would have been a Nottingham Forrest player around 1990. Bizarre outburst. Your obsession with man united is unhealthy.
Bizarre stuff from Sinn Fein.
The more tribute videos I watch, the more I realise, that Ronnie Whelans goal against the USSR is by far my favourite Irish goal of all time. sure the Houghton header was iconic, but I’m not sure I grasped the entire concept of beating England at the time all that much. My family lost their shit at it alright, and I suppose it seeped in somewhat.
But Irish players werent meant to score goals like Ronnie did that day. Not least against a superpower like the USSR. It was incredible. It still is.
And I dont give a fuck if he shinned it or not.
RIP Jack
God, the memories. Shunted into one classroom in primary school to watch the 90 qualifiers on the only school television because Landsdowne Road had no floodlights.
The look of absolute serenity on his mush during the shoot-out in Genoa.
The draw in Belfast - ‘And up yours as well Billy’ - ‘I can’t stand the Spanish’
The goodbye in front of the Kop
Yes.
