JIMMY JOHNSTONE
September 30, 1944 - March 13, 2006
IT was a year ago today that Jimmy Johnstone, the man voted the Greatest Ever Celt, passed away after his long and brave battle with Motor Neurone Disease.
However, if there were ever a voting process that was entirely unneeded, then it was the poll that swept Jinky to the No.1 spot in the hearts of the Celtic support for he was there anyway, always and forever - it was a stick-on foregone conclusion.
The only debate was who was going to be No.2 for there was a long and illustrious list but there was only ever going to be one candidate for No.1.
Time seemed to stand still when the sad news was announced 12 months ago and it was an arrow in the hearts of Celtic supporters the world over.
He passed away peacefully on March 13, 2006 and immediately a million-and-one memories burst into life as Celts everywhere recalled their favourite Jinky stories and never have tears and laughter mixed so freely.
Jimmy was laid to rest on St Patricks Day and two days later, the entire Celtic team wore the No.7 in honour of Jinky as they contested the League Cup final against Dunfermline at Hampden.
A 3-0 win for the Celts ensured there would be cheer of some sort as winning the cup, a trophy that Jinky lifted five times himself as a Celt, was dedicated to the Bhoys legend.
Jinkys League Cup haul was augmented by no fewer than NINE league championships, four Scottish Cup wins and, of course, the European Cup win in 1967.
This year his Lisbon Lion team-mates celebrate the 40th anniversary of their greatest ever achievement and it will probably be then that Jimmy is missed the most.
And there will be a special place for Jinky in the hearts of us all come May 25, 2007.
All the best Jimmy, we missed you as a player and now we just miss you being here.
