Mark Foley and Mike Houlihan are two other Limerick men that you’d say are as deserving as any All Ireland medal winners - but for the grace of God and all that. Two filthy hurlers mind.

Ah, that sliver is fairly well known. I got it off the great Brendan Fulham, in fairness.
JS himself told me, the once I spoke to him, he was a very big 14yo, which helped too. But by all accounts he was a savage hurler. Righthanded backhand-orientated style, same as Maurice Shanahan or Mark Coleman or Tommy Walsh.

Dear Christ, don’t mention Mark Foley in the same company as Ciarán Carey, please. Foley and Houlihan were grand players, good enough to hold their own in any era, but Carey was a special player, a once in a generation. He was some hurler and would hold his own with any of the greats.

What was funny was the quip about Limerick having to put their best player in goal so he’d get plenty ball.
