Croppy mentioned to me earlier that he thinks the Taylor hype is way over the top.

He pointed out that she was 1/4 to win gold at the start of the competition and is now 1/12.

Does anyone agree with the most knowledgeable forumite we have on amateur boxing ?

  2. katie taylor was two steps ahead of eveyone else when ‘womans boxing’ came to prominence having been raised as a tomboy by her parents and forced into boxing and football. the adulation she has received is hilarious and way over the top for a niche sport, a total media creation led by Miriam O Callaghan etc etc.

That one seemed slightly odd as well, was never really fully explained.

I also heard it mentioned somewhere that the head of the High Performance Unit had left to go to America, but it didn’t seem to get much comment in the press at the time.

The same people probably couldn’t name the womens champion at any other division. As you a say completely niche and irrelevant sport, but somehow seen as a mark of how far our society has come that a handful of women now are entitled to box the heads off each other at a global event.
