Just catching the end of this on one of the Sky Movie channels…
What an utterly superb and realistic portrayal of the hopelessness of life in Northern Britain in the 60s…
As gritty as you can get…

How do you know if you’re just catching the end of it?
You don’t need to see a whole film to get a feel for how good it is…
I did this book in English class in school. Of course we watched the film as well to see its transfer from book to film. And it is quite possibly one of the most depressing movies I have ever seen. “Gi’oer tha Jud, tis just not right”
The only bright spot in Billy’s life was Kes the bird and then the brother kills it right at the end…
The film ends with Billy attempting to bury the bird and it cuts straight to the credits…
Couldn’t figure out what they were saying for most of it…
It’s just gritty realism…
Soccer AM, back when it was a decent watch, often used to have Kes sketches that were pretty funny. Always meant to watch the film but never got round to it. Cheers for giving away the ending of it though Farmer.
The football match part is funny. The rest of it’s miserable as fcuk.
Have the film on DVD - think it’s only a fiver or so in HMV. Utterly brilliant film, definitely in my top 10 of all time.
