He was too old by the time he was converted but it suited him much better coming onto the ball and he had the height and the aerial ability to be a help to his centre backs. It was a much more natural position for a guy of his skill-set but with all the limited attitudes to soccer in England he was converted to a central midfielder despite not being able to pass the ball or turn very well.
dont recall him playing too often in the centre of the park at club level. at everton anyway he was on the left wing. had some decent early performance under Kerr next to Keane. would say it was Brian Kerr who tried to convert him into a centre midfielder rather than someone from England with a limited attitude to soccer.
Any chance you are talking through your hoop here?
come back Kev will ya. you are missed
Kilbane’s goal vs Czech in 2006 a few days after we got beat 5-2 in cyprus was to paraphrase Franno a “seminal” moment in the old Lansdowne Road and probably one of the few bright spots of Stan’s reign, never forget the roar when it went in…
I was at that game too. Incredible atmosphere considering the match was coming on the back of a drubbing.
I was at that Czech game too and I don’t really recall the atmosphere. I can’t really pick out one great Kilbane performance, as he had so many of them. I do remember him dominating the French midfield on his own in a 0-0 in Paris under Kerr though. That was the game where Roy Keane disappeared down the tunnel for 10 minutes in the first half after shitting himself. It was okay - Kevin had everything under complete control and didn’t miss his junior partner.
Thought Keane shat himself in his first game back away to Switzerland ?
Your wish is about to come true
Former Ireland international Kevin Kilbane is in advanced negotiations with the FAI about taking up a coaching role with the Ireland’s youth teams.
The 37-year-old, capped 110 times before retiring in 2012, is expected to assist underage international managers Tom Mohan and Paul Doolin with coaching duties for the U17 and U18 squads.
Kilbane has made public his desire to progress into management, illustrated by the time he’d expended on gaining coaching qualifications. It was while working to attain his Pro License badge, the highest grade under Uefa’s syllabus, that Kilbane met with the FAI’s High Performance Director Ruud Dokter in Nyon a fortnight ago.
An invitation to meet with Dokter again, along with chief executive John Delaney, in Dublin last week was accepted by Kilbane and all that’s left is to iron out are the finer points of his part-time role.
It is understood the former Everton player will combine his ongoing television media duties with the new position.
This will be Kilbane’s first standalone coaching role, as he actedas reserve team manager at Hull City in early 2012 under Nicky Barmby while still playing for the Tigers.
That same year, he turned down the chance of becoming manager of Sligo Rovers a month before the League of Ireland campaign kicked off.
Limerick were also unsuccessful in luring Kilbane into management last year.
Kilbane’s appointment will please Ireland captain Robbie Keane, who has bemoaned the lack of former internationals within the underage structures in Ireland.
With 537 club appearances to his name, young Irish players should benefit handsomely from the newcomer’s experience.
Excellent. Given and Kilbane coming through as coaches is excellent news.
Any player with 100+ caps would surely be an excellent coach…
Ruud Dokter - what a great name!
Former Republic of Ireland defender Kevin Kilbane has made an official complaint to the FA following offensive chanting by a large section of their supporters during the 2-2 draw with Tottenham.
The Hammers were denied a valuable three points when Harry Kane scored a penalty deep in injury time to rescue a draw for the home side, but there were reports of both anti-Semitic chanting directed by the away fans towards their Spurs counterparts, while also offensive chanting towards Kane.
The Match of the Day pundit contacted the FA after a close friend reported West Ham fans sang ‘Harry Kane talks like a mong and plays like one too’ during the draw.
The word ‘mong’ is used as a derogatory term for people with learning disabilities.
Kilbane, whose 10-year-old daughter Elsie has Down’s Syndrome, has been told the FA is launching an investigation into his complaint.
“I am sure they understand they are causing offence, “ he said. “You cannot sweep it under the carpet and label it as ignorance. It is visible and clear and like racist or homophobic chanting, it is intended to cause offence.
“I want to be able to take my kids to football matches and when Elsie gets older she will understand about her condition and I would not want her to hear that kind of chanting. If her sister Isla heard it, she would be devastated too, as my friend’s sons were.
“I spoke him and he was extremely upset and I felt I had to report it. No family should have to put up with it at football matches.
‘It was very clear and sadly it appeared to be from the majority of West Ham fans in the ground. This was not isolated to a handful of people.
“I have spoken to the FA and they have assured me they will investigate it thoroughly,” he added.
Kilbane was soon subjected to vile abuse once the Kilbane’s decision was made public.
“Not being funny mate but this is just ridiculous! People like you killing the game mate,” one Twitter user, with other suggesting he was only acting in that manner for publicity.
Other comments were far more extreme.
“Why did you delete the tweet comparing it to racism? Cos you won’t do shit about the Spurs fans that’s why. Cu**,” said another member of the public.
Kilbane earned 110 caps for Ireland in an international career that spanned 14 years.

Kilbane is a thoroughly alright sort! Had a small bit of interaction with him with regards to fund raising for Down Syndrome charities and he’s always given his time if asked. Sound chap and he’s dead right to report the West Ham fans.
I see the word ‘Mong’ being used on here in the past and it just grinds my gears. Pure ignorance on the part of those who use it.
You’ll eventually be allowed sing nothing at games if this kind of PC continues

Kilbane should get his knickers out of a twist.
