Kilkenny Hurling

Pronounced Wattie Whaylan?

All Phelan and Whelan’s in KK are known as Whaylan

Ballyhale are producing some talent. 3 best players on Kilkenny under 20 team.

They always seems to get a golden generation every decade or so.

Liam Dalton lives in Ballymountain which is actually in Kilmacow parish.

His children all went to school in Slieverue, although none of them ever hurled as far as I remember.

Thanks very much. I like to know those slivers.

Mick Fleming, who hurled with Kilkenny in 1959 AIF versus Waterford, is from Ballymountain?

Indeed. His father was known as Jack ‘The Count’ Phelan – The Count Whaylan.

One of the most enjoyable hurling matches I ever attended was when the complete underdogs St Martins beat that great Ballyhale side in the 1984 county final.

In fairness to Muckalee they did go on to win the club All Ireland.

Ballyhale would have played a fair bit in Callan around then and the crowds that would have went to the marches were far more than when other clubs came to town.

That muckalee team seemed to this 13 year old attending the club final replay to be the biggest bunch of men I ever saw .

To be fair, that result was coming… They needed a replay to get over Muckalee-Ballyfoyle Rangers in the 1980 County Final. M-BR amalgamating with Coon gave them the step needed.

They had mountains of men.

Many of them were huge – especially Jim Moran and Tom Moran. They looked like they had been quarried…

Good bit before my time but I’ll run it past the father at the weekend.

Sound, thanks. Think it is the case.

Yeah I remember going to Glenmore Shamrocks games in Mullinavat as a child in the late 80s and early 90s with massive crowds at them. We often had to park a couple of miles out the Waterford Rd beforehand.

Liam is an absolute horse of a man and gentleman also

Mullinavat is a great spot for a championship game. Not the best pitch (back in my day anyway) but a great atmosphere to it. The pitch next door used to be rammed with cars. Also have great memories from games in Piltown and Hugginstown

I was in school with one of his sons so would have been over in the house a bit as a young fella.

Quite sort of fella but had the unmistakable air of a man not to be fucked with:grinning:

Hugginstown and Piltown was where I played mostly. Ballyhale and Windgap too coming near the end of my “career”. Loved playing in Hugginstown
