King Henry of Galway (Part 1) 👑
Port by far the best time by far in second half.

Loughrea played with a strong breeze in first half and scored some lovely points. Infact all 6 of their forwards had scored by HT from what I remember. Port stayed in touch with the goals.

Once the second half started Loughrea hit a few bad wides, portumna threw a few points over and then Hayes goaled… though it should have been a free out as Niall Hayes fouled Regan in the build up.

Andy Smith was savage.

The atmosphere was subdued of course. It was hard to keep a dry eye during the minutes silence.
Loughrea did alright but couldn’t get the goal they needed, how they could do with another Johnny Coen. It’s probably one defeat too many for the veteran core of that team but the young lads Sean Sweeny and Jamie Ryan did alright for them yesterday although I think it was Ryan who swung over the bar from 5 yards with the goal at his mercy, looked like the sliotar might have bobbled on the uneven pitch in fairness to him.

As dogged as they are they are all too predictable and Andy Smith carved them open in the 2nd half. Joe Canning plyed the half back position for a while yesterday, did alright too, thought Chunky excelled in the ‘Bonnar Maher’ role offloading well to set up scores. Portumna looked back to their very best yesterday and will take some stopping in the All Ireland

How long was Duignan over Portumna for? Was he a complete disaster?

Think he was only involved in 2010 from what I remember… not sure to be honest.

Is he on the look for some part time work down in Clare?

I imagine that any such offer would be politely declined. No, I just thought it was interesting to hear his name mentioned in connection with an inter-county job when the consensus on his most high profile role to date is that he was somewhat less than competent.

I think his title was coach or trainer when he was with portumna anyway he wasn’t the head man in the set up. They still got to the county semi final and lost to loughrea the year Clarinbridge won it out, if memory serves. It was hardly a spectacular failure more sort of bog standard.

Strongly rumored that Cunningham has lined up Eugene Cloonan (Athenry) and Damien Curley (Kiltormer)with Tom Helebert losing out…
These rumours are circulating in the media today.

These appointments will be confirmed tonight.

Also in football. Paul Clancy is also joining Alan Mullhollands set up.

I hear Liam Sammon is joining Mullhollands back room team this year. He should never have gotten the sack in 2009. When you look back the football board have made some shocking appointments in the last 10 years.

Thats great news. I was never sure full management suited him but as part of a backroom team his experience will be invaluable.

They’ve all been ratified nothing can stop our march towards All Ireland success or mediocrity.

Any news to keep me going through the Canadian Winter? Is Daithi Burke going to come in from the cold and join the panel and simultaneously solve all our problems at full back and centre back. Will we discover another wristy corner forward fresh out of minor who will promise so much yet ultimately decide that showing off his minor medals in the hole in the wall while drinking tennents is actually more fun than training.

I’m going to go a head and predict that we’ll get knocked out by Waterford again.

Galway GAA May be forced into Sale of Assets

While Leitrim County Board were able to report a surplus of income over expenditure at yesterday’s annual Convention the same situation does not apply in the fellow Connacht county of Galway. It’s now a possibility that the Galway County Board may be forced to sell some of its assets in order to repay debts of nearly €4 million.

County Board secretary John Hynes made the stark admission at their annual convention in Claregalway. The decision to spend €2.8 million on a site near Athenry for the purpose of developing a hurling Centre of Excellence during the Celtic Tiger years, coupled with outstanding debts on Pearse Stadium and the football Centre of Excellence in Loughgeorge, has left the board €3.9 million in the red.

“Our annual repayment on loans is €271,000. To help manage and sustain our repayments, we will need to dispose of some asset and we will need to increase our utilisation of our other assets,” Hynes said.

“A review of our 2013 revenue and costs shows clearly that an increased focus on cost reduction and cost avoidance is needed. We have no option but to ‘cut our cloth to measure’ to ensure that we can sustain our activities and remain self-sufficient in the future.

“In evaluating where we spend, and what we spend, value for money needs to be a key consideration in all of our decisions and, if necessary, difficult decisions should be made to ensure that we get a return on all of our investments.”

o_O

Can they go bankrupt, burn the creditors and start again?

Its a 3 year process isn’t it?

They should sell Salthill. Too windy to play proper matches.
