Laochra Gael - Back, and to the left hand on top

Fantastic series this. Larry Tompkins and Brian Lohan featured in two of the most recent episodes, both teak tough bastards.

Never realised Tompkins had torn his hamstring in the 1988 drawn final V Meath, and yet he went on to convert several frees taken off the ground. He went over to Old Trafford where he spent the next two weeks receiving physio from then United physio, Jim McGregor. The United players thought he was mad, but couldn’t believe that as an amateur sportsman he was in better shape than they were…Mind you, given that McGrath, Whiteside and Robson were among the United squad, perhaps it shouldn’t have been too much of a surprise.

He also did his cruciate in the 1990 final, but played on and helped Cork to victory. His treatment by by Kildare was fucking shocking and he was forced to borrow the price of his plane ticket back to New York after the county board refused to pay for it following their Leinster championship defeat to Meath.

As for Lohan…What a fucking player, and another man who played on with a torn hamstring in an All Ireland final. You almost get the feeling watching it that he remembers the ones that got away more often than the ones they won, especially the 2005 AI semi final defeat to Cork, where the disappointment is still clearly palpable. If only his auld lad had had stayed at home in Galway…

N.B. Most of these shows are to be found on youtube, though neither of these episodes appear to have been uploaded yet.

Have always wondered about these torn hamstrings and played on stories. Maybe im just a soft cunt but rom my experience it would be literally impossible to run let alone play on and play well in an all Ireland final.

Ya fella, you’re soft.

Played with a torn hamstring and a ruptured cruciate but kept out of a Munster Final by sunburn.

That must be wrong, didnt someone on here say you couldnt play on with no cruciate?

Some people can.

You must have missed that thread.

Do you seriously reckon its possible with a torn hamstring Kev?

I think the format has gone a bit stale and could do with a bit of a revamp. Lohan’s one was very much by the numbers

Depends on the grade I suppose , but in theory we’re tearing muscles all the time and they just grow back. If the player had extremely strong Glutes and a high % of hamstring:Quad muscle ratio then ya it’s very possible.

did they explore the boiling water story for the sunburn excuse at all?

What was that story?

Agree with this. Didn’t even watch the Mullane one.

As pointed out earlier on here, they’ve given episodes to Cora Staunton and Juliette Murphy, I mean FFS sake.

+1

Zero insight into what made him tick.

It just basically went from game to game with his reflections.

His bitterness about the replay awarded to Offaly was odd given that it was in compliance with the rules of the game.

water burns caused by an irate husband who found him where he should not have been

There’s too much overlap between the games and incidents covered. A few older ones might be interesting but footage is the problem there I suppose. Anyone got a list of who has been covered in all the series to date?

I thought Lohan came across extremely well in his. Seems like an intelligent man. What does he do?
