Gay was a bit of a prick - But RIP ---- At least the Late Late had substance when he was involved. I didnt have to tune in for the tweeness of the show anyway last night, there is enough twee off @myboyblue’s posts here for everyone in the audience

In fairness the notion that Ireland would not have entered the modern world if it wasn’t for the Late Late Show and the Gay Byrne hour is pretty funny.

There was no prior benchmark for Gays talent as a presenter. He kind of came to prominence just as everyone in Ireland were getting a TV set for the first time. From the get go he had a captive audience and in many respects one he did not have to win over. Gay was compelling and was good at his job but he was the standard bearer. Peoples attitudes to presenters these days is quite skeptical and at times cynical because Ireland has gone from accepting a grand narrative to many versions of the truth and Ireland of today does not accept being told how to think or behave.

Im not accepting he changed the country either. He retired from late late in the 90s. Young people started listening to Top of the pops, MTV, internet came to more and more households even if it was dial up internet, Every kid had gameboys and Nintendos. Peoples access to information increased through the accessibility of technology.
