Oh yeah, your post reeks of it.

Your posting was like a fat kid in a sweet shop - the excitement and tweeness was adorable, bless you.

Jesus you really are annoyed, this is fascinating to watch.

How could anyone forget ā€¦

He was a minor presenter on a regional channel in the UK in the early 1960s before coming home to work for Radio Eireann. Then in the 1980s in the middle of his I hate this country/everyone should emigrate phase he tried his hand for a summer as a talk show host in Philadelphia but got nowhere.

Theyā€™d have ate him without salt in Philly. They donā€™t suffer fools there.

So he used Philly as a bargaining tool for a new contract?

Didnā€™t work.

Canā€™t blame a man for trying

It was after Russell Murphy had cleaned him out.

He was in a bad place at that stage

Fagan

How much did Russell do him for ?

Russell used to have a little trick heā€™d play on potential clientsā€¦ When heā€™d be meeting them for the first time in his office, before proceedings would wrap upā€¦ he had a little button on his desk that heā€™d press to alert his secretaryā€¦ sheā€™d arrive into the room in a tissy saying that Peter Sutherland was on the phone and needed to speak urgently.

This had a two fold effect of bringing decisions to a head and displaying the importance of Murphys accountancy practice to big hitters like Sutherland.

Some cunt all the same

And he lost his pension in bank shares in later life

The Late Late Show was the product of a homogenous, mono-cultural, mono-ethnic society, and a small society in terms of size

Ireland was an insular socity, but because of its small size, it was simultaneously outward looking

Thatā€™s a contradiction, but both were true

Byrne didnā€™t change the country, he reflected how the country was changing

It still is those things, and it is certainly more outward looking to a degree that is much greater than other English speaking countries, who are now much more insular

I donā€™t think the Late Late Show and its format could have worked anywhere else

It seemed to me that non-Irish guests would often open up more here than they would in their home countries, maybe because nobody in those countries would see what they said here - thatā€™s not the case now - and maybe because the so called great figures of US and UK television were vastly overrated at what they did

For all the talk about UK and US television, the standard of their mainstream talk shows and general interviewing is and always has been almost uniformly terrible

Personally I thought Byrne was a much superior interviewer to the likes of Michael Parkinson

Like, the highlight of Parkinsonā€™s career was his Muhammad Ali interview, yet Cathal Oā€™Shannon did a much better interview with Ali

And Parkinson was still miles ahead of the tripe on US television

Fool me once , shame on thee.

Fool me twice , shame on me.

All that is true and the points are well NBC made but Byrne aspired to be Johnny Carson.
