He was a minor presenter on a regional channel in the UK in the early 1960s before coming home to work for Radio Eireann. Then in the 1980s in the middle of his I hate this country/everyone should emigrate phase he tried his hand for a summer as a talk show host in Philadelphia but got nowhere.
Russell used to have a little trick heād play on potential clientsā¦ When heād be meeting them for the first time in his office, before proceedings would wrap upā¦ he had a little button on his desk that heād press to alert his secretaryā¦ sheād arrive into the room in a tissy saying that Peter Sutherland was on the phone and needed to speak urgently.
This had a two fold effect of bringing decisions to a head and displaying the importance of Murphys accountancy practice to big hitters like Sutherland.
The Late Late Show was the product of a homogenous, mono-cultural, mono-ethnic society, and a small society in terms of size
Ireland was an insular socity, but because of its small size, it was simultaneously outward looking
Thatās a contradiction, but both were true
Byrne didnāt change the country, he reflected how the country was changing
It still is those things, and it is certainly more outward looking to a degree that is much greater than other English speaking countries, who are now much more insular
I donāt think the Late Late Show and its format could have worked anywhere else
It seemed to me that non-Irish guests would often open up more here than they would in their home countries, maybe because nobody in those countries would see what they said here - thatās not the case now - and maybe because the so called great figures of US and UK television were vastly overrated at what they did
For all the talk about UK and US television, the standard of their mainstream talk shows and general interviewing is and always has been almost uniformly terrible
Personally I thought Byrne was a much superior interviewer to the likes of Michael Parkinson
Like, the highlight of Parkinsonās career was his Muhammad Ali interview, yet Cathal OāShannon did a much better interview with Ali
And Parkinson was still miles ahead of the tripe on US television
