Byrne denies ‘meaningful’ talks about Late Late

Claire Byrne has denied reports that she entered into any “meaningful discussions” with RTÉ about succeeding Ryan Tubridy as the presenter of The Late Late Show.

In a statement posted on social media yesterday, Byrne denied the job was offered to her by the broadcaster, after the Business Post reported that a number of concessions were made by RTÉ in an attempt to make it more appealing.

Byrne was, according to the article, seen as the “only viable candidate” by senior figures at RTÉ, who offered to reduce the number of shows broadcast and to shorten each episode to 90 minutes in an attempt to convince her to take on the job.

She responded by reaffirming her decision to take her name out of the running after “a long period of deliberation about what it would mean for my work and personal life”.

An RTÉ spokeswoman said that Byrne was “never offered” the role. RTÉ presenters Sarah McInerney and Miriam O’Callaghan have also said they are not interested in the position.

Presenter Patrick Kielty, another name linked with the job, said the Late Late is “one of the greatest TV shows on the planet” and that “whoever gets that gig will be really, really lucky”.

Speaking ahead of the Irish Film and Television Academy Awards, he said people should remember that the next presenter would have big shoes to fill in replacing Tubridy.

“I have done a live show before,” he said alongside his presenter wife Cat Deeley. “We both have . . . It is hard.”

Asked if the couple would consider moving to Ireland, Deeley replied: “Let’s see if you [Kielty] even get it first of all, shall we? Shall we talk about it then?”

Kielty added: “Let’s see if we survive room service tonight.”

My mate coaches juveniles out in Ashbourne on a Saturday morning. Well helps with the chaos. The bould Rory lands in late, does fuck all and then posts about the hard work he does!

Same with his runs.Does around 500m , stops , takes a selfie and posts it. Then heads home. :grinning:
