Ronnie Whelan was world class, Brady was better, genuinely one of the very best players in the world at his peak, maybe didnāt fit into what Jack wanted but itās quite believable that weād have won euro 88 if heād been used properly.
Only RoyKeane can compare to what weāve had since between the pair of them.
Before Robbie Keane came along, Niall Quinn was the record Irish goal scorer with 21 goals I think. Just ahead of John Aldridge and Frank Stapleton. Tis a wonder we managed to be successful at all with so little goals scored.
Is the Saudi Arabia game in '02 still the only major finals game weāve scored more than 1 goal?
Ireland scored 0 goals in 9 of those games (1 of those games went to extra-time)
Ireland 1 goal in 13 of those games (1 of those games went to extra-time)
Ireland scored more than 1 goal in 1 of those games.
How many did they concede? Jack Charltons goals against in major finals was unreal. The last two were bad for that stat. Shipped a couple of wallopings
Never forget Robbie was very greedy, demanded to play in every stupid game - hat tricks against Faroe Islands, San Marino and Gibraltar count for 9 of his āinternationalā goals.
Games like that should have been used to build new blood and confidence but they were used instead to bloat Robbie Keaneās ego.
At the expense of blooding letting new players pop easy goals. Look at the games he scored in versus the ones we needed him to score in. He was cooked long before the fans saw it.
Ronnie was superb, bit like Paul McGrath he was so versatile
I think there was a few qualifiers for euro 88 where Jack had Paul McGrath right back Ronnie Whelan left back McCarthy and Moran in the centre of midfield with Mark Lawrenson and Chippy Brady centre of midfield!! By the time the finals came around Lawrenson and Chippy were injured so McGrath and Whelan were midfield
Back to my original question, did Jack not rate Whelen post 1988 or was it just a case of injuries caught up with Whelan?
