That was basically the thrust of it. You can become a barrister in your spare time.
The attrition rate at the bar is horrendous and a lot of the newbies have to practice as barristas at night to make ends meet. About 60% drop out before 6 years

Why do they let so many in if there isn’t work for them all?
There is no demand for night time coffee, they would be better served getting up early and doing the 7am to 9am shift
I assume it is a major funding stream.

How does the whole barrister / solicitor relationship work?
Would solicitors use the same barrister the whole time? All barristers are sole traders aren’t they?
Most solicitors would have a group of barristers they’d frequently use be it for their speciality, knowledge of the law, friendship or trying to get into undergarments.
There’s only very limited ways in which you can instruct a barrister directly. The solicitor is supposed to do all the day to day work on a file and handle money and the BL looks after legal drafting and advocacy.
There are some directly employed Bald like in the AGs office but a large proportion are self employed
