An SSE Airtricity League of Ireland player has failed a drugs test for a banned substance.
A random test was taken after a match last month and traces of the drug, believed to be cocaine, were found.
The player has not featured for his club recently as a result.
It’s expected he will receive a heavy ban, though he will have the right to appeal any sanction.
Former Shamrock Rovers goalkeeper Barry Ryan is the only player known to have failed a test for cocaine in the league in 2003.
He was suspended for 15 months for the positive testing, later reduced to 9 months.
