no player from Tullamore - I know football is the main game in Tullamore but you would think they be an odd player or two on the hurling panel, as they do have a hurling team, big town
An All-Ireland club title winner with Buffers Alley in 1989 when he must’ve been late 30’s considering he won a minor All-Ireland with Wexford in 1968. The Alley team from 89’ must’ve been some dads army effort with Tony Doran holding fort at full-forward and his brother Colm Doran on the panel too.
Just a lack of talent at the moment and a tendency for talented lads to play football. They’re improving underage and are well represented at inter county at those levels. Ballinamere is in Tullamore parish. Na Fianna, which is just outside Tullamore, have very strong hurling teams at younger age groups.
It’s primarily a football town. There’s very little tradition of hurling. Kevin Martin was one of very few to make a real impression. Shane Dooley afterwards, but that could be put down to family tradition.
Hennessy was a good one, if I am not mistaken, he was selected on an all time St Flannans selection when one was put together, maybe I am wrong on that
What’s the story with Birr? It’s not a massive town but it’s a decent enough size with a huge history etc? Very few high standard players in recent years.
I believe they took their eye completely off the underage set up.
But sure alot of it it luck too with birth rates and natural talent of youngsters too…its impossible for clubs (even if they have a big pick) to keep on producing talented hurlers year on year.
Only after seeing the offaly panel in the league final that I realised how many hurlers Ballinmere/Durrow have on the county panel - i see they have never won a county title either so would be nice to see them win one with all the talent they have at the moment. Maybe an Offaly poster has the inside knowledge but is their new found talent due to their location just outside a big town and they have recieved a population boom in recent years?
