Thanks for that - both layered and informative.

It is a unique town.

Republican royalty in John Joe McGirl and Blueshirt royalty in Pat Joe Reynolds, both with pubs and living side by side.

I don’t think there was much aggro down the years @Chancer ?

The advent of the canal development made up the town. There was a shirt factory there with about 100 ladies employed which was an economic godsend and created disposable income to beat the band.

There’s always been huge community spirit - SOH have won several Scór titles between trath na ceist, novelty act, set dancing etc., There’s been a drama festival since the 50’s and any assorted tomfoolery you care to name. The amalgamation of the Convent & St. Felims created a huge community school catering for the surrounding hinterland.

Behind most town events lies the hand of Tommy Moran. He, along with the likes of Christy Gallogly, Gerry Mahon and Sean O’Sullivan kept driving the club on since the 1950’s.

The two political heavyweights at the bottom of the town tended to their own folk and relations were always the finest. Amazingly, even today, the outlying parishes - The Neddies, The. Willies and Drumreilly all have their funerals with McGirls leaving the townies and Fenagh with Smiths.
It certainly doesn’t have the headaches their neighbours to the East have.
On that note you’d be half afraid to open this thread with the goings-on.
