So were Roddick and Hewitt. Hewitt won his first slam two years before Federer won his first, Hewitt was 6 months older than Federer. Roddick was two years younger than Federer and won his slam 2 months after Federer won his first.
The bottom line was they soon got left behind by the emerging players despite being young themselves. When Roddick and Hewitt burst on the scene they were the future of tennis, they were the history 3 or 4 years later - like McIlroy.
