I’ve gotten a bit of heat for using the N word in relation to our black brothers. My point in using it was simple, as long as black (North American) people refer to each other in that manner than that’s all they will ever be referred to… I’ve said as much multiple times… I’m glad FOTF, @JayZ, finally took this on board and has released a new track more or less saying the same- at least that’s what I take from it. If you subscribe to a culture of self-depreciation then how can you expect anyone to take you serious?
I enjoy some hip-hop and can take the odd reference to the N word but when it’s over done I physically can’t listen to it - the same with the word bitch.
I’m not the slightest bit racist (cc @Turenne@glasagusban@alf_stewart, and I get the discrimination in the states but as long as you play into that as a sub-species then that’s how you’ll be treated… the fact that their ‘cultural’ leaders in the rap world play up this stereotype for fame and to line the pockets of white bidness men makes the whole thing cyclical - While music should be about fun and entertainment, these boyos should also be taking some responsibility and setting an example - yes, rap about racism and police brutality but do it in a way that engages young black people to free their mind from the old slave narrative - not enslave them further to an unequal society, because that’s all this N glorifying does. (I know plenty of rappers do engage in this but the main-steam by enlarge, dont)
Is there a socially acceptable word that can be used instead of the N word?
Anyway - props to my homeboy @TheUlteriorMotive for hooking me up with this sick beat -
I gave that a like. A well thought out post and raises some interesting points. I still think your post the other day was a poor attempt at humour and in bad taste but you are free to say what you like. I wasn’t attempting to label you a racist for it. Context is everything and the screaming Mary’s going around throwing out accusations of racism sexism etc boil my blood. Words mean very little especially online. Actions speak much louder.
You’d have us believe that an insular prick like yourself would have black friends? Jesus wept
I’d say your only interaction is handing over a 50 after you’ve degraded one of the women for your own sick pleasure.
I think you’re confusing the offensive and socially unacceptabe word “nigger” with the term of affection “nigga” which is not just common in black culture, but also white culture (mostly white trash culture) in the US. However, I am giving you a tentative like for bringing up the word for discussion.
“Nigger” has some pretty serious historical connotations, as it’s linked to violence and brutality, lynching and the like. If you want to test out how offensive black people still find it, you could walk into a bar on your next visit to the US and go up to the first black man you see and call him a “nigger”. We’ll hold a wake for you.
It’s a complicated question, with a complicated history. I agree with you though that the use of the word in hip hop culture adds to the complexity and generates a double standard as white people who love hip hop (again mostly white trash like your Cork buddy) tend to use the word as well, but if they are dumb enough to use it directly to a black person are likely to get their head boxed off.
