He surely had some input. I mean his stamp was all over it. I would imagine when he was brought in initially, conversations were had as regards style of play, system etc.
What would the match ups be? Finn v Eddie Brennan? Would Declan Hannon take Shefflin? I’d say Gillane would do very little on JJ Delaney. Kilkenny might be in trouble in midfield on Cian Lynch. Derek Lyng? Cha Fitzpatrick was kind of past his best by 2008.
Tommy Walsh versus Gearoid Hegarty would be box office.
Yeah I’d be thinking the same. Kilkenny by a narrow margin. Flanagan and Gillane wouldn’t get much off Hickey and Delaney I reckon. Although Limerick are probably stronger in the middle 3rd.
Looking back at the VT of the game, the footage of the Cork management at the first water break is comical.
Kingston is trying engage with his players but is interrupted by Fat Sully, touch tight behind him, whispering tactical gems into his ear. Kingston looks confused.
Cunningham then arrives on his other ear and starts mumbling away and is largely ignored. But then Cunningham’s hand goes up to his ear, himself interrupted by O’Grady in his earpiece, delivering some indecipherable nonsense in that appalling Cork accent.
Cut to Limerick, all players organized, focused on one voice, taking in one or two key points. That’s management.
It hasn’t changed that much in the space of 10 odd years, in terms of fitness the intensity of some of those Tipp, KK battles was unreal. This years Limerick team didn’t get a challenge anywhere near that. None of the other teams (including Tipp) have a forward line that can occupy the Limerick backs like that KK could have.
PS. This isn’t an attempt to take anything away from Limerick
Yeah, I’d be inclined to agree. Although Flanagan would probably try and take Hickey for a tour . What he might get out of it would be another story.
For what it’s worth, I think this Limerick set up have s lot more to achieve before they can be compared to that Kilkenny team.
On the other hand comparing the AIF s of 08 and 21, I think Limerick just about shade that one. The reason being (and Mullane even says it in today’s indo) that Waterford simply didn’t show up from minute 1. Cork at least seemed to be motoring away nicely up to Gillanes goal.
People go too much about systems also, the fact of the matter is Limerick have by far the highest quality, fittest and best prepared hurlers in the country at the moment.
Wouldn’t disagree with that at all Fran and as I’ve said Limerick need to achieve a lot more before you can have a proper conversation about it. But just fast forward hypothetically for a moment. We all agree that one of the reasons that Kilkenny side are still top dogs is because of some of the epic battles they had with Tipp in particular. If Limerick do power on and put together a run of 6 or 7 (not suggesting in a row ) getting caught on the hop once or twice. Can you not make the argument that it’s not that they had no competition but rather they were so well coached skilled, talented (whatever way you want to label it) that even the best of the rest couldn’t come within 3/6 points of them. ? I’m not saying it’s going to happen but if it did, I at that stage at least wouldn’t accept the point that they had noone to put it up to them
