Very true but it is wrong to say that kilkenny were not coached. They were but not to the level of sophistication that Kinnerk has with Limerick. They were coached well enough to beat the previous great system team (Cork).
Forget about the 2021 Limerick team being fitter etc than 2008 KK, that’s a given. I’d say if we put a TFK 15 together right now and played the 1904 AI winning KK team we’d hammer them, you’d have to assume that it’s a level playing pitch and all player (and their coaches) are at their peak.
Still KK 2008 for me.
People talk about Limerick’s system like they are welded to it… The one great strength the team has is the ability to adapt to anything thrown at them. They can play the game any which way you want… Their in game intelligence is off the charts. That’s kinnerks greatest achievement, not the ‘system’
I agree with all that. They can tweak/adapt to what is in front of them. Again, that is down to great coaching largely.
Absolutely… He throws so much at them they can deal with anything on the field. Cody did a less scientific version of it and just let his lads murder each other every night.
Are the 1904 team allowed to use our sticks and have a few days to practice with them?
Yes I’d agree with that. What Limerick seem to be doing and I think this is as a result of the 19 defeat is bringing in subtle changes in each game. I’ll give you an example. It was declan hannons first score. Hayes collected the ball, gave a ball up the wing to Lynch and took off taking his man with him. Cork were expecting a return ball from Lynch and started to roam toward the wing in order to cut off the space. All of a sudden Hannon comes bombing through the middle, takes the pass and boom, over the bar. In fact you could make the argument that Hegarty was told to start making those runs instead if Hayes. Both his goals came from that wing and you could see the similarities between Kyle’s goal v Cork in Munster and his goal in the Munster final. The point being that Limerick expect teams to sit down and analyse their system and come up with ways to counteract it. A few subtle changes may not be obvious on first glance but when you go back and look at it , its obvious what’s after happening. Kinnerk is probably sitting down already looking to tweak it for next year.
100 percent
Funny you should say that. The father was telling me he watched the replay of the 96 Munster final during the week. He reckoned that Westmeath would have beaten the pick of both teams today
No, like for like. 1904 sliothar in the first half, 2021 version for the second.
We need a left-half forward, can you do a job for us
@iron_mike you evolve or die. That’s why Kinnerk is vital cog in what Limerick have and hope to achieve. As long as he remains with Limerick, I genuinely feel rest of counties are playing for second best.
Will Kinnerk ever want or take the top job at a county? At the water breaks he’s the one calling the shots.
Youd wonder will he go back to the football at some stage. I’d say the likes of the Cork or Galway, even Mayo footballers would take him in a heartbeat
I also feel there is inherent snobbery with traditional counties that would never have resulted in Kinnerk getting a coaching gig with them, if he was from those counties.
In Cork for example, those involve are usually ex intercounty players. I cant remember the last time we had someone coaching our team who did not come from these ranks.
If he was to ever leave Limerick, it would be to a professional team in football id imagine.
That points to greatness of Kiely as a manager. He delegates and does not need to have the spotlight. It’s all about the team rather than the individual. Contrast that with what you see at Cork.
You know. I actually doubt it. It would possibly take him out of his comfort zone. If he was manager and had a coach with him, I could see him inadvertently getting involved and that would be a recipe for disaster. For better or worse, Limerick hurling is now run like a business. You have Kiely as CEO and leaves everyone else concentrate on running their own departments. His job is to make sure they run it in such a way that when the balance sheet remains healthy
Taking some sort of credit from it is a bit inadequate in my humble opinion.
If some of the lads here coached members of the Limerick panel at underage then you could understand that sense of pride.

I’d say if you sat down and watched Cork 04/05 and watched Cork this year, youd hardly be able to tell the difference. I’d lay the blame for that at OGradys door. I think it was Anthony Daly who said during the week that he would not get involved in a senior inter county set up because it has evolved so much. This is a man who managed Dublin to a Leinster championship just 9 years ago
My understanding is O Grady had zero input in coaching. His role was video analysis of opposition @Bod95
