Limerick GAA 2023-2024.... 5 in a row is not here

I have him at 7 above…

As far as im aware it was non hurling reasons why he originally stepped away and i think he might be given a look.

A massive loss.

He isn’t overly pacey but would be a better option than Coughlin on the 26 you would think

This year we were still pretty decent and perhaps a combination of key players being injured plus another year in the legs plus being caught by tactics that really went after what weaknesses we have caught us.

I don’t think we’re going anywhere soon but while we might get those injured players back, we might have different ones next year and we can’t do anything to slow the passage of time.

All we can do is try and continue to produce young players and see if we can incorporate them into the team. They did a good job of that this year with a decent chunk of Championship time for AE, SOB, DOD2, FOC, AOC as well as CON, obviously. I still think we might have scraped over the line against Cork if we’d been a little quicker introducing them. I would expect at least 2 more of them will be starting most of the time next year.

HB is a bit of a long-term issue, for sure, we might have to come up with a creative solution for that in the short-to-medium-term.

I don’t think I baldly stated that. But there’s a chance. And I’ll take that as a compliment.

Adam English could be anything.

Hard to know where Aidan O Connor will end up - is he a long term 11? Or inside ?

My man in Adare says Hannon won’t be back.

I have it on good authority that Kiely & Kinnerk are going nowhere.

Kiely would have gone before the club championship started if he was going.

He’s some simpleton that fella. Isn’t he a Munster rugby fan too?

Premier Intermediate

And the club championship gets going tonight with the Premier Intermediate; always the most entertaining of the grades in Limerick and it’ll be very very tight again. Just the two matches this weekend to kick us off, with the others due to be on pushed back to a football weekend, I believe. McAuliffe’s have the outright priced as the following from the outset:

5/2- Garyspillane
3/1- Blackrock
7/2- Newcastlewest
9/2- Bruff
11/2- Effin
7/1- Granagh/Ballingarry
10/1- Glenroe
14/1- Na Piarsaigh 2

The Bouncers obviously just down from Senior are probably justifiable favourites and will feel that they were unlucky to go down last year. But they won’t have it all their own way. Jimmy Quilty Senior is back over Blackrock again and it was only a last-minute point that defeated them in the county final, and that was without Jimmy Quilty Jnr, who is probably their best player now. You did feel they were overachieving last year but should have a right crack off it this year. I like the look of Bruff this year, couple of decent young players added and Sean Finn back too. But even NaP2, who are seen as outsiders, did fairly well early on in this last year until they lost a couple of players to the seniors. G/B are newly-promoted but do have a lot of firepower… I genuinely couldn’t call it without seeing some sort of form.

Thursday July 25
Granagh/Ballingarry vs Newcastlewest @ 7pm in the Bog Garden

Saturday July 27
Effin vs Garryspillane @ 7pm in Bruff

An all-West clash gets us going tonight in the Bog. Newly-promoted Granagh/Ballingarry take on a team who have been pushing for promotion from this grade for the past few years, NCW. I’ve actually seen both these teams in recent weeks and saw them a couple of times each last year aswell. Slightly interesting sideplot in that Paul O’Grady was over NCW for 5 years but is now coaching G/B so he will know NCW inside-out. G/B were very impressive last year in the Intermediate with the tallies they racked up and they welcome two of their main forwards, Sean O’Connor and Luke Flynn (who was a Limerick senior panellist earlier this year), back from the US for this match. They are a front-loaded team imo; they have 6 forwards who are well able to score but it does seem as if Dodge has finally stepped away after last year’s county final victory (for the moment anyway). But O’Connor, Flynn, Cathal O’Keeffe, Mike Russell, Damien O’Donovan and Paudie Murphy; 6 strong forwards with Darragh Casey well able to contribute from midfield too.

I think they probably do have that over NCW but NCW do have, imo, a lot more pace & athleticism and have a few classy players of their own. Cathal Hayes and Diarmuid Lyons were county minors in 2023 and are nice additions to have. If Diarmaid Kelly is fully fit and ready to go, he’ll be some addition for NCW after he missed all of last year, I believe. Bryan Nix, Brian Foley, Brian Hurley, Eoin Hurley and Con Hayes were the main men in attack last year; I thought the older Hayes was very lively around the middle/centre-forward for the Limerick 20s so it will be interesting to see where the lines out this year for NCW; they can possibly afford to play him slightly further out the field if Kelly is back & firing. Ethan Hurley was on the Limerick senior panel all throughout 2024 and he’ll tie things together at 6; he has a lovely strike of the ball; he just needs to impose himself on these kind of games. Jack Cagney is a nice player at 6 for G/B too but not quite at the same level and I do think that G/B can be got at defensively. But then… they do have serious serious firepower so I guess it balances out; it’s an aggressive approach which I like. There is the football question with NCW too- 4 or 5 of their starting hurlers were with the Limerick senior footballers so won’t have a whole pile of hurling done this year and sometimes it can take a while to find their rhythm (certainly was the case last year).

For me, it’s very hard to call. I saw both of them recently but I know NCW were only just back after a few weeks off playing football whereas G/B were missing 3 of their best forwards. I do think NCW’s pace and athleticism could hurt G/B a lot but if G/B’s boys back from the US are full firing, I think they could cause an upset here. I’ll tip G/B by 2 but wouldn’t be surprised by any result. Expecting a detailed match report from @dodgy_keeper later.

Effin were semi-finalists last year, Garryspillane just down from senior; this should be another very tight match on Saturday in Bruff. Haven’t seen the Bouncers this year, it seems as though they have Donie as manager with the Clarecastle duo of Aaron Considine & Darragh Moloney as S&C (I believe they were with Toomevara a couple of years ago). Where Garryspillane were an old team a few years ago, they are now a young team and the likes of Dylan O’Shea, Ciaran & Calum Sheehan, Bryan Heavey, Ryan Tobin, etc. are now seen as experienced players as well as their multiple All-Ireland medallist, Mark Quinlan. They also have Hugh Flanagan in their ranks this year which is an interesting one. Any player who starts for the county U-20s as an 18-year-old is a player worth watching. John English also is an underrated forward in my opinion. I expect Flanagan to make a big impact in this year’s club championship tbh; having forwards who are able to win their own ball & score, you can’t buy that. They have lost players in recent years though: Eoinside is still abroad and Paddy Kennedy went playing professional football. If the panel they fed to the Leader is correct, they are now also without Declan Barry, Kieran Hickey and Haulie Bourke as well as Gearoid Power & Cathal Shanahan; a lot of experience gone. So they are a young, exciting team with a lot of talent, who feel they probably should never have come down in the first place but won’t have it easy down here.

I like the look of Effin this year, they probably have the most talented forward not on the Limerick senior panel in Paddy O’Donovan, who is capable of racking up big scores, while also having Fergal O’Connor and Nickie Quaid down the spine of the team. Jack Quaid is back from Australia which is a huge boost aswell. Ryan O’Neill is a good keeper and the other O’Connor, Ruairi, is a very lively forward. Tommy Quaid is still plugging away aswell, Ewan Dillon scored plenty last year and Pierse O’Kelly is an old-style full-forward who can grab goals. Jack Quaid being back, a few of their players getting more experience on county panels and having Seanie O’Donnell in their management team all point to them being stronger than they were last year. Again, I think there could be an upset on the cards, I’m going to go with Effin by 3. I won’t get to it on Saturday, I’m away, but if anyone does, throw up an oul match report, please and thanks.

In last year’s outright prediction competition, we had 32 entrants and @alwaysdrinkin came out on top with 5/10 correct predictions getting all 4 senior predictions right as well as Cappamore getting relegated from Premier Intermediate.

Only 1 person (shockingly, @balbec) predicted the Stakers to get relegated from Junior A and only 1 (surprise, surprise @dodgy_keeper) predicted Granagh/Ballingarry would win the Intermediate and not even @ciarancareyshurlingarmy had Mungret to win the Junior.

I’ll set it up again for this year.
