The two lads were ferocious competitors, that’s for sure, in Val Dorgans book, written shortly after Ring’s passing and referenced already by @Breaking_my_balls Mackey wasn’t prepared to give Ring much praise, sometimes focusing on the games where he was well held, he doesn’t ever say he was a better player than Ring though. Two very quiet men off the field, shy even, according to many.
But they were never pals, far too competitive for that.
