Gillane may or may not be good enough to get a start for the seniors, it’s just a pity that he wasn’t around for more of the league. Possibly only two matches left now and then it’ll be challenge matches up until Championship. Unless he were to really stand out in those games, unlikely that he’ll really have a chance to prove he’s good enough.
He is good in the air, although he’s not the biggest and able to take a score, always useful attributes.
Gillane is young and good and well worth place on the squad . He would not have been on the minors in 13 and 14 and one feels that clouds judgement . One worry I have is that if lads did not feature in underage elite squads if can cloud judgement . The Brian Fenton tale should be noted .
He was on the minor panel in 2014. Not a starter, but he was definitely involved. And I would have presumed he would have been included all the way up along?
But in 2014, he wasn’t good enough to start for the minors. Even last year with the 21s, he was given a start and didn’t really impress. That said, I think he’s improved a lot in the past 18 months or so, surpassing fellas who were previously better than him.
Apart from TFK has this been reported else where? I doubt if he will be back. I heard from a club mate of his that he was deff heading to the States (admittedly that was two weeks ago).
Anyway he is only a kid so he wont make or break the team.
We don’t have any player that would ‘make or break’ the team but he would be a serious addition to have in the panel and on-form, fully committed & fit, he would definitely make the starting team.
And with regard to being a kid, this is true but he’s also the same age as Austin Gleeson was last year when he won Hurler of the Year, Ronan Maher when he was key to Tipp’s All-Ireland win, older than Tony Kelly when he won an All-Ireland & Hurler of the Year. Now those three are exceptionally talented players and Nash isn’t on that level but players are retiring earlier and earlier; we’ve had a few retirees by 30, it’s a younger man’s game now.
TJ Ryan got severe criticism for not having the balls to drop lads and managing a bloated panel. Same lads think it’s great that Kiely is carrying 37 men in the squad. You literally couldn’t make it up.
There’s probably another few to be culled from that panel post-league, but Kiely has always said that he intended to carry a big panel, think he had circa 40 with the 21s. Don’t really see an issue with having a big panel; certain players may get pissed off themselves if they are not utilised. It’s a lot of commitment if you’re consistently outside the matchday squad.
Yeah, @dodgy_keeper, @Elvis_Brandenberg_Kr and @glasagusban all said he was afraid to fall out with anyone and make the hard decisions. They also said you don’t get a proper read on players and they don’t get a fair chance to prove themselves if your panel is too big and players are coming into the starting team, quickly going back out, then brought back in and out again. They said it’s bad for confidence and continuity and leads to more uncertainty than any real benefits.
