Five-time All-Ireland winner and Limerick hurling star Kyle Hayes is due to appear in court later this month after being charged with dangerous driving.
He was arrested in Cork on Sunday on suspicion of committing a road traffic offence.
Hayes was pulled over by gardaĂ on patrol in Mallow after allegedly being clocked driving at more than 150kmh in a 100kmh speed zone.
The 26-year-old was taken to the local garda station where he was detained before later being charged with dangerous driving.
He was granted station bail and will appear before a sitting of Mallow District Court later this month.
The offence, contrary to Section 53 of the Road Traffic Act 1961, can result in a fine or up to six monthsâ imprisonment on summary conviction.
It comes just four months after Hayes, who works as a HR officer, walked free from court with a suspended sentence after being convicted of violent disorder.
He was handed a two-year suspended sentence last March and ordered to pay compensation for two incidents of violent disorder at a Limerick nightclub that left a young carpenter with serious facial injuries.
His sentencing hearing was attended by Limerick hurling manager John Kiely, who offered character evidence on behalf of one of his star players.
Mr Kiely personally appealed to Judge Dermot Sheehan to give a second chance to the star hurler, who was hailed in character references as âa role modelâ.
In a statement yesterday, a garda spokesperson said: âGardaĂ in Mallow arrested a man for an alleged road traffic offence on Sunday, July 14.
âThe man (20s) has since been charged in relation to the incident and is due to appear at Mallow District Court at a later date. As this matter is now before the courts there is no further information available. Investigations are ongoing.â
The alleged offence took place a week after Limerickâs âdrive-for-fiveâ in the All-Ireland hurling championship was halted by Cork at Croke Park.
Hayes featured in the game, which the Treaty County lost 1-28 to 0-29. He has been a key player in the successful Limerick squad in recent years that has won five All-Ireland titles since 2018.
He has also won four All-Star awards, five Munster titles and picked up the young hurler of the year award in 2018.
The presiding judge told his sentencing hearing in March that the threatened use of violence by Hayes on the dancefloor of the Icon nightclub four years ago was âextremely dangerousâ.
Hayes was ordered to pay the victim âŹ10,000 in compensation, half of which was to be paid within four weeks of the court hearing and the remainder by September 30.
The judge also noted that Hayes had been abusive to gardaĂ when they first intervened in the incident outside the venue.
He was convicted of two counts of violent disorder following the trial at Limerick Circuit Court but acquitted of a third charge of assault causing harm.
Limerick County Board has been contacted for comment by the Irish Independent.

Can we get @Ceist back on board to tidy up posts where fellas have copied and pasted stuff off of newspaper websites, the standard is appalling. Heâd tear into that kind of work, so he would.
âLimerick county board have been contacted for commentâ
- Why? Itâs nowt to do with them.
- Most modern journalism appears to be a form of self abasement.
You should be banned for that copy & paste effort
Itâs the gom that will come along and do a quote-reply that especially needs watching
At least he was sober
Two year suspended sentence hanging over him. Cops were sitting in the long grass waiting for as much as a littering offence.
Yeah youd think he would keep the head down alrightâŚ
He was just trying to get home before his curfew
Donât think road traffic offence will activate that, itâs not a criminal conviction. Probably be put off the road if convicted
Ah no, surely not?
Has an All Star been delivered to Limerick prison before?
A delivery from Four Star Pizza would probably be the closest to it.
Thats HOTY probably gone now youâd feel. This is the sort of thing the judges would probably have the neck to look down on him for.
He was rushing to a commemorative event in honour of a young man from a great Limerick GAA family who died last year
Ah thats grand so. The Garda should have apologised for interrupting him.
You could certainly argue that alright.
I blame Drew Harris and his anti-gaa gearbag stance
Youâd want to be a special case to do so but shur look it.
