What game was on in mungret today

Adare v Na Piarsaigh.

I still think he could have a role to play for limerick

Finished 3-21 to 2-11.

So looks like the Well and ourselves straight into the semis with Doon and Kilmallock probably joining both after the q finals. All very predictable.

Exactly as one would have imagined before a ball was pucked and hard to see anything other than a NAP v Well final. That’d be a decent enough tilt.

The Well don’t have anywhere near the backs required to hold NAPs forwards, they would win by 4-5 pts it’s near impossible to beat them inside the Gaelic grounds.

That’s really what it comes down to

Just back from Bruff.

Massive win for Pats as they turn over Hospital/Herbertstown 0-16 to 1-11.

Hegarty was a colossus. Ran the show from centre back. Nailed long distance frees and grabbed two absolute worldies from play for good measure.

The two point lead at the break looked flimsy playing into a strong wind but they powered on, the ever lively Calvin Moran impressing. A real team effort though, all the more impressive considering they were without the three Mullins’ who had a wedding this weekend. Proper spirit and heart to see it out for a finish.

H/H will be disappointed after turning over group favourites Glenroe last week. Their big players like Mark Deegan couldn’t grab a foothold. Aaron Murphy impressed at full back, they trailed 0-15 to 0-09 late on and threw him up to the edge of the square and he promptly banged in a goal to narrow it to a point but Moran had the final say with a spectacular effort from out by the sideline.

Deserved win for the city lads that throws the group wide open.

Glenroe P4 Pts 6
Pats P4 Pts 5
H/H P4 Pts 4
Effin P3 Pts 4
G/B P3 Pts 3
D/B P4 Pts 0.

We remain top of the table with a good result against Bruff: 2-16 to 0-16 the final score. We had the wind in the first half, and didn’t use it well enough, hit an awful lot of wides and Bruff were probably the better team on the balance of play. Very good at switching the play from one side of the pitch to the other and got a couple of good scores using that tactic. Sean Finn was solid at centre-back, Paul Browne was good in midfield; Chris Browne, Colin Madden and Kyle Dillon all lively in attack.

Barry O’Connell hit two inspirational scores for us from centre-back in the first half but honestly, we were fortunate to be level.

We upped it a lot in the second half and were deserving winners. Darren O’Connell hit a goal and we never really looked like losing after that. He finished with 1-3 from play. Kyle hit 4 from play in the second half, finishing with 0-5. Bobby O’Brien had a good enough oul outing but Kyle can just hit different levels completely when he gets going.

We totally destroyed their puckout in the second half too, backs were well on top really. Conor Staff scored a fortunate enough goal in the final ten minutes to really open up a gap. They threw Browne & Finn into the forwards as they chased a goal and John Chawke made a few routine enough saves; Finn did hit the crossbar too.

Puts us on 9 points with 2 games to go; Dromin/Athlacca are on 7, Mungret on 6, Bruff on 5 and then Blackrock, Cappamore & Bruree all on 4. We’ve got a semi-final place now but still plenty to play for elsewhere.

Pats had 7 starters tonight that were not available last week. Had 4 starters from last week missing tonight. Have not been able to field full strength yet this year. Hopefully against Glenroe. Will give most teams a run with a full strength squad at this level.

Surely 4 draws in a Championship group has never been seen? Looks like winner of Monaleen v Ballybrown and Ahane v Murroe will advance. Draws would suit Monaleen and Ahane.

In terms of actually going up, Monaleen still hold a slight edge but have to win against Ballybrown. If Ballybrown win, they have to hope Murroe/Boher beat Ahane.

Is going up a poisoned chalice? If clubs don’t have aspirations to compete with the best, what’s the point really?

Last year both quarter-finalists were beaten comfortably. Maybe Doon & Kilmallock are slightly below where they were last year.

Doesn’t say much for limerick hurling when Mike houlihan has to go to cork for a good game.

Its vitally important that both Monaleen and Mungret St Pauls emerge as genuine county senior hurling championship contenders in the next few years. Both these clubs have far superior juvenile structures than Kilmallock, Patrickswell and Adare at the moment and they are also very well respresented on the Limerick underage hurling academy panels this year. Hopefully the hard work that both clubs are putting in at underage level will pay rich dividends in the near future. They’ve both witnessed what Na Piarsaigh have achieved this decade so if Na Piarsaigh can do it, there is every reason to suggest that Monaleen and Mungret St Pauls can do it as well as both have similar size catchment areas to Na Piarsaigh. The rise of Na Piarsaigh, the success of Ard Scoil Ris in the Dr. Harty Cup and the establishment of the Limerick underage hurling academy kickstarted the revival of Limerick hurling and once hurling is thriving both in and on the outskirts of Limerick city, the sky is very much the limit as to what Limerick hurling can achieve in the next few years. We don’t know how lucky we are in Limerick county to have progressive and highly efficient GAA clubs such as Na Piarsaigh, Monaleen and Mungret St Pauls. Hurling is alive and well in Limerick city and long may it continue.

N.a. piarsigh have a few advantages other clubs don’t.

Wouldn’t necessarily agree. What Monaleen and Mungret have is weight of numbers. No real outstanding hurlers. NP had superb underage teams culminating in the present group. Castletroy school hasn’t really advanced hurling on that side like ard scoil did. It needs an exceptional group to propel it forward and don’t see that in either monaleen or mungret

Just back from Knockaderry.

Intermediate hurling result - Newcastlewest 0-15 Feohanagh/Castlemahon 0-14.

NCW prevail in a low key west derby that never really ignited. The victors deserved it, really strong second half display saw them get over the line. Young Diarmuid Kelly was the match winner, a fine score at the death to win it. He grabbed three or four points from play in a virtuoso second half performance. He was able assisted by Eoin Hurley beside him at centre forward who was also outstanding - that half forward dominance was the platform for the victory.

By my reckoning the Flanagan’s provided every F/C score, bar one savage point from Jamie Butler late on. Three defeats out of four for them now, a result that extinguishes their chances of progression to the knock out stages (I think).

Paul O’Grady has done a terrific job with NCW. Has them fit, organised and disciplined (well, as disciplined as any NCW team is ever likely to be). A good young coach who the powers that be should be introducing to the academy system.

John O’Halloran was the man in the middle and I’d rate him as the best ref in the county.

Heard Na Piarsaigh beat Tour also.

It’s very disrespectful to the Tippereary and Kilkenny lads to be banging on about some mickey mouse club games today of all days.
