I was getting increasingly optimistic about this game all week until I saw the teams. Galway have too much more quality I think. As i said a while back, Iād be happy with a good performance. With injured players and na piarsaigh to come back a creditable performance leaves us in decent enough shape for championship.
The opposite I would have thought. English doesnāt have the pace for Whelan.
I donāt agree at all with all the negativity surrounding Hickey. He has over done it at times by taking too much out of it but I think heās been one of the best Limerick hurlers of the last 15 years. A former young hurler of the year, an all star, he played very well under Kiely last year at wing back. He has been solid as fuck so far at full back. He did a few dallies up the field against the Dubs but to be fair he was probably bored in the second half. I hope Galway do target him tomorrow, weāll see how he gets on
Itās a one liner but itās not true. That said, if these 4 unproven young lads, the chap most of you think should be in the backs and the guy who was hurling with Kildare last year put up 2-20+ then Iāll be the first to admit I was wrong. And Hayes, Dempsey, Downes, Casey and the great Shane Dowling to come back into the mix too. Youād be in an incredible position.
That Galway FF line is exactly the test we need right now. Between this and the QF we will have had two really good tests before the NaP lads return and we focus on championship.
I really think in current formats, 1b is a much better place to be.
That Galway team is nowhere near full-strength. A serious full-forward line alright, but Jason Flynn isnāt even a starter. He is very talented but can be marked.
I do have reservations about Hickey at full-back, as most do, but when giving a man-marking role, he generally flourishes.
Missing Daithi Burke, their best back. David Burke, their best midfielder. Joe, probably their best forward. Callanan, their best goalkeeper. Mannion has to go back into the full-back line when I think he really came into his own on the wing.
Obviously our team is very inexperienced too- I think 4 of our 6 forwards have never started in Championship? But there is now a bit of a settled look about the backs and midfield; and I would be hoping we wonāt be destroyed physically like last year.
