Mulcahy,Flanagan and Gillane will do serious damage to Tipps FB line if Barry is FB and Mickey Cahill misses out with injury, both Flanagan and Gillane can win their share in the air but all ball in Mulcahys direction must be low and fast into space.(I think Mulcahy will get the nod ahead of Murphy for experience inside.)
Itās all about the balance between the short play & feeding the full-forward line quickly. Itās a thin line, overcomplicating things in midfield/half-backs can be disastrous (we gave away a couple of soft scores against KK last year), but equally so is giving your forwards shit to deal with.
I hope we donāt revert to type when the intensity is raised, but I donāt think we will. This is where all that training & challenge matches pays off; when the heat is on, youāre mentally & physically drained and under pressure from an opponentā¦ do you make the right decision?
Last year Hayes was only ever going to be a wing forward for the rest of his life last, a minute ago he was an awful corner forward in a match he played half forward, and now heās now heās a centre back by trade.
He mustnāt know whether heās coming or going.
The big worry is if Gillanes ankle doesnāt hold up. Murphy is the next best free taker starting or else you bring on the Dow but that means wholesale change.
Hayes was always 6 for his club. since possibily under 10s.
I would say Flanagan will get 40-45 mins inside at FF and if heās not making inroads Dowling will go in for the last 25 mins or so.
Bringing in Dowling does not mean wholesale change. Morrissey has been playing the same role as Dowling did last year in recent matches. Straight swap. Which is a better player. Simple call for management to make, their decision to make based on form and fitness in training.
Thereās absolutle no comparison between dowling and morrissey. You havenāt a notion.
Were anymore challenge games played? One last week against Dublin wasnāt much preperation but I expect that the in house training games were very competitive the past week.
Morrissey is probably one of the fittest and hard working players on the team. Willing to track into his own half back line. Dowling has great vision and is very good in the air but itās absolute lunacy to think Dowling could play the same role as morrissey. Dowling had a poor game against Kilkenny in the half forward line last year. If he was to start it would only ever be at 14. Heād be fine for twenty minutes at 11 too but as for half forward only a mad man would start him there.
Wasnāt much due to 21s.
I would guess this is the last inter county season for Richie Mac,Hickey, maybe Browne and almost certainly Condon.
Is Condon injured or else just not on the panel anymore?
Dowling had a poor start to the kk game last year and went on to have a great game and was one of limericks best performers on the day. Anyone that doesnāt recognise that is clearly a fool. Dowling was wing forward and spent much of the game tracking back and helping as far as the half back line. Not the best use of his talents imo but he performed the role well. Management agreed, they used all their subs but Dowling played the full match.
Once Hayes came back in the league this year he went centre forward where he looks to be first choice. Morrissey moved to the wing, performing the same role Dowling did last year.
Dowling swapped to 14 and had a good game.
Why? Hickey is an athlete and still caoable of performing well, canāt see why heād be walked away. Ditto Browne, loads to offer. McCarthy should be starting in my opinion but if he is discarded in the way Gavin was last year then why wouldnāt he walk away just the same.
I think heās still on the panel but little to no chance of him making the match day squad, the Munster league final I think was the last time he came on?
Donāt think heās on the panel anymore.
I think both Hickey and Browne are one more poor showing as starters before they are benched and at this stage with so many miles on the clock and so many talented youngsters waiting to jump in I just donāt see them with the stomach for the fight if that happens.
Heās been hung out to dry a few times over the years alright; but if youāre looking at last year- he was caught in a mix-up for the first goal in the Clare game and was taken for a few scores. He returned to have a good game against Kilkenny.
I like Richie, and I wouldnāt have picked Hickey there; I would have gone with English personally. But Kiely has kept faith with Hickey, and heās mostly done alright; with Richie doing a good job against Galway when he slotted in.
I suppose itās a good thing too- thereās 6 good fellas there in the full-back line; he can only pick 3 of them.
To be honest, Iāve always really rated him, heās just a class player. He has grown into his role as a leader though. He may not be the captain, but he is the driving force in that team.
My favourite player to watch in the team.
