Ger Downes?? How has this lad climbed the ladder so quick. No pedigree as a coach. Who has he won things with?? Employed by Limerick Seniors last year and one of the top clubs in the county and province now…based on what i dont know.
The top club.
He’s been a full time development coach or whatever you call it for a while now. Worked with LIT before too I think.
He’s been a GDA for the past 4/5 years and was by all accounts excellent in the role. As a GDA he would have been precluded from taking up coaching jobs with any club bar his own.
Ger is a sound skin from the handful of times I’ve met him. Well connected afaik
@Joe_Player’s buddy -
An uncharacteristic lapse in judgement on this one from @Breaking_my_balls
Kilmallock would only take the best so he must be good.
I know he was a GDA ffs…i know all about the chap. And he’s a sound chap.
Now deal with my point. What pedigree has he as a coach to warrant the top coaching role with last years Munster Club Champions and All Ireland Club Finalists? Its a big role to get wothout being proven. A GDA Officer MOSTLY deals with Primary Schools and Underage Hurling. I have made no error of judgement, its a fact that the man is completely unproven to coach a side at this level. Big call from Kilmallock in my opinion.
+1
He took us for a couple of training sessions last year, sound lad but obviously unproven for coaching a senior club coming for a development role.
Dinny Cahill is a former employee and friend of Don Flynn, Limerick’s new selector. This is the basis on which we make crucial appointments. I give the whole set up until March from what im hearing.
Kiely & Co. better be ready to step in

Things may be turning around a bit with the Senior Hurlers. They trained again last night in UL.
Apparently the players are hugely impressed so far with Joe O’Connor. He has a very good system in place for monitoring the physical needs of the players. For example, if one of the lads in college plays a college game on a Tuesday, it is Joe O’Connor he reports this to, not TJ or Clarke or Flynn. Joe then informs the rest of management. So it is Joe that calls the shots on anything to do with physical activity and gives that player the rest and recovery he needs. He has the control in that area, which is the way it should be. All done through an App too apparently!
However much the players were uninspired by Dinny Cahill on first meeting him, he is winning them over I hear. It is clear to the players he is working closely with Joe O’Connor on how the sessions are structured. Players are impressed with a lot of the drills etc. This is beginning to quench some of the reservations they had about his appointment.
Apparently there are 37 on the panel at the moment. I had it confirmed to me by a separate source that Donal O’Grady, Aaron Murphy, Stephen Walsh, Pat Begley and Conor Allis are definitely gone. All the starting 15 from the U21s have been called in and are included in that 37. Obviously the Na P boys are not in at the moment. There are also 4 or 5 lads in at the moment based on club form last year on trial for a few weeks. None of these include players from Bruree or Drom/Broadford either as far as I know.
Still dont know if Tom Ryan, Adrian Breen, Cathal King, Tommy O’Brien or David Reidy are still inside. Doing the maths, two out of those five must be gone.
Maybe things aint so bad
Tom Ryan is gone to the US and is out of the equation. Cathal King and David Reidy are kept, with Tommy O’Brien and Adrian Breen gone, as far as I know.
When reading @Breaking_my_balls posts I veer from “we’ll struggle to win a game next year” to “we’ll win the thing out”.
The Limerick way
I manage to do the same to myself! Basically a lot of the players are’nt in love with TJ/Clarke and are a bit sceptical of Flynn but the reality is that 90% of the physical preparation & Hurling training will be done by Joe O’Connor & Dinny Cahill. If the players are happy with them and they are well prepared then your a long way down the road. Joe O’Connor is the key man. Under his guidance, Cahills drills and hurling sessions can be at the required level.
He is the quintessential Limerick Hurling supporter then.
We are all the fuckin same
