A lot more confident of beating the Dubs after the training tonight. They went hammer and thongs at it. A huge step up on anything I’ve seen. The fans might be waving 2015 goodbye but the players are most certainly not. Focused and confident ahead of Saturday.

at this stage i’m thinking why not?
FF line is the only one on the pitch we have options for (for one reason or another)
can’t see a HF line of breen / hannon / dowling though, no pace at all
i don’t care who we put there as long as there’s a bit of divil in them

he was effectively centre back against westmeath
was he in the forwards for the minors last year or is that his brother i’m thinking of?
he was better suited to murtagh, matched him for height and stood beside him under dropping ball in a way gavin couldn’t
that said, murtagh has a spare tyre richie mac would blush at, so he’ll have a different challenge against dublin. who knows which of their seemingly identikit interchangeable corner forwards he ends up on.

is TJ saying he’ll allow gavin to sweep assuming the dubs play 2 up front?

I can’t see how you can start Paudie anywhere at this stage. He’s not a wing back, he doesn’t get about enough for midfield and he certainly isn’t a centre forward. You don’t like Breen, grand, but he’d be far more effective at 11 than Paudie, even if he is awkward to look at.

Ideally I’d want Downes at 11 in the future. It’d be great if we had half back cover and could move Gavin forward but we haven’t. Gavin, Downes, Hannon would be a decent line. Next year there’s the two Lynch’s who are both probably best at midfield or half forward.

You couldn’t play Hannon corner forward either, he was lost at full forward even.

Agree on midfield, for now. Ryan’s form seems to have dipped though, he’s living on last year’s performances for me. S O’Brien could be a good option here.

I honestly don’t know what the story is with Hickey. He cleaned everyone he marked last year, Noel McGrath, Horgan, and dominated TJ Reid who was in the running for HOTY. Maybe he’s been playing injured which would explain why he wasn’t used even with a corner back home off injured against Westmeath.

For the next game I think there’s only a few changes you an make and hope that players like Hannon and Hickey are going to come good. Presuming Condon’s out:

Quaid
Walsh McCarthy Hickey/Seanie
Wayne Gavin Hickey/Seanie
Ryan Browne
Breen Hannon Downes/Dowling
Lynch Downling/Downes Tobin

I’d start Tobin because he’s a quality player and great to work and tackle, he also must be ripping for a chance to start and the speed of a fresh Mulcahy coming in with 20 to go would be a nightmare for any corner back. Worth a try and at the least you wouldn’t lose much between them in the change.

It’s been a long time since I felt as sick at the end of a match as I did following the mugging we (Limerick) got from Cork yesterday. Following Limerick GAA, the footballers in particular, you tend to get used to low points but that doesn’t make what happened yesterday any easier to take. For 69 minutes they fought like dogs and had last years All Ireland Finalists on the ropes. Even when down to 14 men they still didn’t let Cork into the game and to lose it all in the space of 35 seconds is just brutal.

I wasn’t giving this team much chance going into the game earlier in the week, but when I got home on Saturday I read an interview with Limerick half-back Pa Ranahan, he seemed extremely confident and he asked a very simple question of the interviewer “Do you think I would be training since last December if I didn’t think we were capable of going out and beating Cork on Sunday?”. And how close they came. As a game of football it was nothing special, lots of mis-directed passes, nothing balls and missed scores, but it was tough, hard honest football. If I felt sick yesterday I can’t imagine how Limerick goal keeper Sean Kiely felt, as it was his mistakes which led to both goals. But if Limerick can produce a performance like that in the qualifiers we might get another few days out of them yet.

Sorry about the rant, but I’m still drunk, full of red bull and feeling a bit bitter that I didn’t get a jambon on the way into work and now I’m fucking starving.

Right, big week ahead. 4 championship matches in the next 8 days, three of which are knockout games.

Munster intermediate final tonight v Cork
Senior qualifier on Saturday v Dublin
Munster minor final on Sunday v Tipp
U21 Munster semi final tomorrow week v Tipp.

What are your predictions, gents? Think the senior and minor matches are 50-50, we will be up against it in the u21’s while the intermediate isn’t the be all and end all in terms of the result - if a few of the younger lads stake a claim for the senior panel next year I’d be happy enough.

To win three of those matches would be a great return.
