Limerick Hurling Championship Preview Thread

Excellent previews there. It seems that the top spots in each group may be sorted in the first round of fixtures. Doon young team seemed to lack belief to beat Adare in last years semis but without as much pressure on them should have enough to win.

Na Piarsaigh have been known to start slowly in recent years so Kilmallock to nick this one imo. Ahane versus the Well should also be a great game.
True but that might be counteracted by the new management effect, teams often get a bit of a bounce, looking forward to seeing how they get on.

Doon 1-15 Adare 0-10. Doon finished the last 2o mins really strong.

Throw up a report if you can please @ThunderPuss.

Just back from Rathkeale.

Ballybrown 1-20 Granagh/Ballingarry 1-13.

Battling display from the G/B lads but Ballybrown were that bit stronger.

I wasn’t there, just following the updates on twitter. Doon outscored Adare 1-8 to 0-3 in the 2nd half.

Also read that Murroe were 10+pts up against a 14 man knockainey at half time.

Here we go with Round 2…

SHC Group 1
Adare v Murroe/Boher. Friday at 7pm in Clarina. Referee: Trevor Mann

Adare will be looking to recover from a heavy opening round defeat to Doon and can’t afford to lose another game in this, the harder of the two groups. Murroe/Boher’a game with Knockainey last week was effectively over by half-time but they’ll meet better opposition here.
Verdict - Adare

Knockainey v Patrickswell. Saturday at 3pm in Claughaun. Referee: Declan O’Driscoll
Both lost last weekend. The Well gave Ahane a big lead before coming back to fall short by a point, 1-20 to 1-19. Cian Lynch remains exam-tied and eyebrows were raised at some of their tactics when backed by the wind in the second half last Sunday. Knockainey picked up a couple of red-cards against M/Boher and that won’t have helped their cause.
Verdict - Patrickswell

Doon v Ahane. Sunday at 2pm in Caherconlish. Referee: Jason Mullins
Impressive wins for both in Round 1 and the winner here will seize control of the group and be favourite for an automatic semi-final spot. All three Morrissey’s were to the fore for Ahane against The Well with Niall Moran’s experience proving key. Doon disposed of Adare a lot easier than many thought and an All-East clash will bring out the fireworks in the traditional venue of East Limerick hurling. Doon look to have that bit more firepower up front and, if they don’t concede too many frees, should get over the line.
Verdict - Doon

SHC Group 2
Effin v Ballybrown. Saturday at 7pm in Kilmallock. Referee: Denis Richardson
Ballybrown were never really in trouble against Granagh/Ballingarry while Effin were abject against South Liberties. It’ll be a big ask for them to pick it up in a week against the dark-horses in this group. Hard to see past a comfortable win for BB.
Verdict - Ballybrown.

Na Piarsaigh v South Liberties. Saturday at 7pm in Claughaun. Referee: Donal Enright
Na P blew away a fancied Kilmallock team in the second half last week and still look like the side to beat in this year’s championship. They’ve traditionally found Liberties hard to put away and will face a battle here against a team that performed very well on Round 1. They should still have enough though.
Verdict - Na Piarsaigh

Kilmallock v Granagh/Ballingarry. Sunday at 6.30pm in Dromcollogher. Referee: Jason O’Mahony
This is the first time in many years that Kilmallock will play a championship game in a venue other than Bruff or the Gaelic Grounds. Is Spike’s influence on the wane I wonder? G/B faded badly last week but have beaten this opposition already in the League. Kilmallock took a hiding from Na Piarsaigh and will have to improve substantially. They have the players to do so.
Verdict - Kilmallock
Premier IHC
Blackrock v Croom. Friday at 7pm in Bruff. Referee: Richard Moloney.
Croom top the table with the only 100% record and will fancy their chances of making it 3 wins from 3. Mike Galligan has them playing a nice brand of hurling and this could be a very entertaining game in what is turning out to be an excellent format. Blackrock showed a lot a character in hauling in a 12-point deficit with 14 men last week but can’t afford to cough up such a big lead this time.
Verdict - Croom

Bruree v Garryspillane. Friday at 7pm in Kilmallock. Referee: Padraig Power
Big boost for Bruree in a battling draw with Dromin/Athlacca last week whilst The Bouncers struck late through young Colin Ryan to upset Bruff. Hard to call this one as both can mix the good with the bad. Garry get the nod in the basis of that little bit more up front.
Verdict - Garryspillane

Knockaderry v Hospital/Herbertstown. Saturday at 7pm in Bruff. Referee: Aidan Ryan
The westerners find themselves pointless after two games and need a result here or they’ll be in relegation trouble. H/H are probably their closest rivals for the drop and will be targeting this game to get their campaign on course. They may fall short I fear.
Verdict - Knockaderry

Bruff v Dromin/Athlacca. Sunday at 2pm in Kilmallock. Referee: Johnny Murphy.
Wobbles for both sides last week after impressive opening round wins. Bruff were sucker punched by Garryspillane while Athlacca felt the loss of Paul Neenan’s sending off in a battling draw with Bruree. I believe Neenan is available after his red card was rescinded and Athlacca can’t continue to over-rely on David Reidy. They’ll just about edge it if they don’t.
Verdict - Dromin/Athlacca

IHC Group 1
Glenroe v Feenagh/Kilmeedy. Friday at 7pm in Martinstown. Referee: Liam O’Sullivan
Good wins for both last week. Glenroe easily disposed of Mungret while Feenagh weren’t daunted by their return to the grade by taking care of Caherline by 7 points. Glenroe’s greater experience could tell here.
Verdict - Glenroe

Mungret v Newcastlewest. Friday at 7pm in Croagh. Referee: John Paul Kiely
Poor performance by the City side against Glenroe which wasn’t helped by a red card for Brian Begley just before half-time. NCW battled well against Claughaun and belied tales of their poor preparation. Interesting to see if they can do it again.
Verdict - Mungret

Claughaun v Caherline. Saturday at 7pm in Caherelly. Referee: Michael Flannery
This already has the look of a winner stays safe, loser gets relegated game about it. Claughaun missed a host of chances last week and if they can improve on their shooting should scrape home.
Verdict - Claughaun

IHC Group 2
Killeedy v St. Kieran’s. Friday at 7.30pm in Newcastlewest. Referee: Justin Daly.
Both lost last week. Killedy outfought by Cappamore with the Ardagh men giving Monaleen a right battle. Killedy to just come through.
Verdict - Killeedy

Cappamore v Kildimo/Pallaskenry. Sunday at 7pm in Claughaun. Referee: Martin Doherty
A game played and a well-earned win should stand to Cappamore here although Kil/Pal recently upset Na Piarsaigh to win the City IHC.
Verdict - Cappamore

Monaleen v Pallasgreen. Sunday at 7pm in Caherconlish. Referee: Patrick O’Carroll
Like the above fixture, Monaleen’s game played will be an advantage. Plenty of county minors on display and you can never rule out the Pallastinians. I’ll go for a draw.
Verdict - Draw.

It will be great for the West crowd to see Kilmallock coming into town and putting on a show.

All fixtures and previews are now included…

Well done Elvis, a very neat summation of the games. I see the ref for the Mungret game is the same one who dished out 6 red cards at a recent Mungret game.

No harm. Thugs need to be kept in check.

Great summary there @Elvis Brandenberg Kremmen

Is Colin Ryan of Garryspillane a son of TJ/Teege?

He is indeed. Big young fella with plenty hurling in him.

Was that a football game against Abbeyfeale by any chance?

I think we might see a few upsets this weekend. Ahane v Doon should be a great game and it will be interesting to see how Liberties do after their great start last weekend.
Murroe to beat Adare would be the likeliest upset though imo.

yes

Just back from Croagh.

Intermediate hurling championship result.

Newcastlewest 3-10 Mungret 3-10. Downpour all during the second half ruined the game, Mungret had led by 9 points early on. They scored only one point in the second half.

Senior hurling championship result. Adare 1-20 Murroe/Boher 1-16.

Premier intermediate hurling championship results. Croom 0-16 Blackrock 1-11. Garryspillane 1-14 Bruree 0-12.

Final two results from tonight:

IHC St. Kieran’s 2-9 Killeedy 2-6

IHC Glenroe 0-20 Feenagh/Kilmeedy 0-9

anyone have an update as to how Hannon went for Adare, is he still carrying an injury?
