I think as heâs relatively new to the intercounty roster (only on it a few years and this is the biggest game heâll have been in charge of) heâll be fussy and blow for everything. Not sure who that will suit.

We only scored two frees that day but it certainly didnât feel like McGrath rode us, the non free in to Donnelly was the only big decision he got wrong imo. He let it flow for both teams.
Would have preferred someone like Horgan here whoâll let a lot go but is generally consistent enough.

We play borderline as it is. Horgan would destroy you on his own with frees if he blows for everything.
Analysis of a ref and how they handle things is important too. Certain refs clamp down on certain things, and are more likely to let other things go. No point whinging too much about it.

Yeah, Horgan just doesnât miss. Distance or angle irrelevant - if itâs a free in itâs a point. Heâs a 98% free taker, as good as youâll get.
As you say our full backline tend to sail close to the wind at times, last thing we need is a raft of early frees awarded and seeds planted in OâDwyerâs head.
At the other end Cahalane tends to be a free magnet too and a walking yellow card.

I agree, he comes across as a bit of a gom, and giving interviews etc about being awarded the game is not a good sign
I donât agree with this âX doesnât miss freesâ statement. It was said about TJ Reid before they played us, he missed his first. Iâd consider Dowling as good a free taker as any and he missed a few against Clare.

To be honest I think the standard of refereeing has been pretty decent this summer in hurling.
Canât remember a high profile game being decided by a refereeing decision or general performance.
Football is almost impossible to referee in comparison.

Itâs remarkable really, hurling at that level must be bloody hard to ref even before you have fellas cheating to try to gain a match turning advantage
