Limerick v Cork, tits done now

The Limerick lads are a likeable bunch and much like Galway last year, we would love to see them get the '73 monkey off their back. And maybe for fucks sake stop whinging about Gary Kirbys fucking finger.

Gary was in fine form yesterday post game. - Men like him deserve to see Limerick win an AI. His fingers looked fine ate-ing chips anyway.

@dodgy_keeper - Your good pal Murray, of Zebo and Murray fame, was there shouting on the boys in Green yesterday when you refused to travel yourself… Conor is deserving of his ticket for the final.

So Limerick have now defeated in the same championship season the big 3. Effectively knocked out Tipp in the first game with a knockout blow, and put Kilkenny an Cork out of the championship. Has it ever happened that a team has beaten all the big 3 and not won an AI final? @GeoffreyBoycott @Sidney ? If Limerick do win it, particularly if they beat Galway, it would be on of the hardest routes and most undeserving of the famed asterisk for a long time.

Yeah, it’s high risk stuff but to the winner the spoils.

I don’t think so.

I’m replying simultaneously here as @GeoffreyBoycott so you’ll have to see what he has to say.

In football Kildare beat the three previous All-Ireland champions Dublin, Meath and Kerry in 1998, but lost to Galway.

I referenced this last night. Waterford (1959) and Clare (1997) to the best of my knowledge only two sides to previously beat Big 3 in same year and both won All Ireland. Clare had beaten the Big 3 prior to the 1997 final and beat Tipperary a second time in the final, but only just by 1 point.

If Limerick win, the narrative will be that it was the greatest/hardest All Ireland ever won.

If Clare win it, the narrative will be that it was an even softer win than 2013 - only one of Big 3 beaten (and that a Tipperary side who didn’t win any of 4 championship games), lost twice to a mentally feeble Cork, took a replay to beat an injury ravaged and jaded Galway and only beat Limerick in a final.

If Galway win, narrative will be they won two yellow pack All Ireland’s, only beating Waterford and Limerick in the two finals.

Limerick are the only winner from here in the court of public opinion. If there’s anything worse than not winning an All Ireland, it’s winning one with an asterix after it.

Just like Kilkenny in 2007 and 2008.

The final wins over Cork in 2006 and Tipperary 2009 probably just about validated those Kilkenny wins in 2007 & 08.

Kilkenny certainly spread around the pain in the 2000-2015 period, beating seven different counties in finals:
Tipperary x 3
Cork x 2
Galway x 2
Offaly
Clare
Limerick
Waterford

But they never beat Wexford in a final and thus that whole era has to come with an asterisk attached.

Only just awake now. There was some amount of porter put away last night, put away lads. @Sidney’s point about Limerick clawing back leads on points alone is well made, the infamous “Limerick surge” was on display yesterday, a gradually building hum of guttural roars and lads in green jerseys whipping over points. I was full sure that Pat Simon had handpassed the ball down at the Hill 16 end, so when the green flag went up and the roars around me kept roaring, all the nervous energy left me like a deflating balloon and I watched the remaining minutes in a serene bliss. The airing of Linger at the end was up there with Magic Moments getting thrun on in Katy Daly’s after the 2013 Munster Final.

You could mention a lot of players, Quaid, Finn, English, Hannon, Hayes, El Dow… but the guys who have been there and done that often mention the need for “leaders” on the pitch. When our need was greatest yesterday, Graeme Mulcahy stood tall. How tall, exactly, is still up for debate of course, but my God he played some game.

We may be townies but these lads have titanium running through their veins

I thought the dow should have been mom or elso hego

Hegarty had his best game for Limerick yesterday. Richie English superb also, as was Will O’Donoghue when he came in.

Hegarty was immense yesterday… Led the charge with Mul when we were struggling…

The 15 minutes before half time i thought hego was immense.

Hego was immense, he’s so good. The interception from the Nash puckout, the flick pick up and point was class. He’s just a warrior.

Mulcahy would have been my man of the match though. Kept us in touch.

Kyle was unreal in the last 10 of normal time too. That point was massive and he just covered huge amounts of ground. I’d say the ould lads at home nearly wet themselves with excitement when he went centre-back.

And literally all the subs made an impact, the Dow was like a man possessed. WOD’s athleticism was huge and Pat Simon’s pace and first touch. Casey’s intelligence too.
