That’s a serious row back from you. I thought his performance for a finish yesterday was terrible. Standing around with his hands on his hips. He’s meant to be the senior player on the squad and acted like a spoilt child. I adore Messi but I’d have question marks over him now tbh.
I think he was way below the standard I’d expect from a player regarded as the best ever.
Way below it and he’s been way below it when he has played for Argentina and in recent seasons in the do or die CL games for Barca.

he gave the ball away more than any other Barca player (from deep). That’s murder in an away tie for Barca, especially against Liverpool who spring counters.
He was charging out of the line in midfield, trying to make hero tackles, leaving gaps and exposing his defense.

Messi passed up a goal in the first half too when Alba squared it back to him, he scores that and it’s game over.
Not what you expect of the best player to ever play the game, it’s what you expect from a guy who has choked more crucial big international games than I care to remember.
So you admit again you judge him differently to everyone else. You actually judge him as the best player in the World. But you refuse to admit he’s the best player in the World.

You would have to expect more from a player who is meant to be the best, meant to be the greatest but doesn’t even look near the top 5 on the pitch.
he wasn’t at Barca. He had a fine first 3 or 4 months at Barca and then was pretty average for the most part and more often than not a let down, but injury did not help. Pedro and Alexis Sanchez were first choice ahead of him for two of his three years there.
An excellent player for Valencia and Spain, he was a big letdown at Barca for the most part.
He was outstanding that season they beat united. Scored an incredible goal in that champions league final. He broke his leg that summer I think but I’m open to correction on that. He definitely suffered from injuries after that season anyway.
He had half a good season there and his form dipped dramatically the second half of that first season. That was about it. He would not have been seen as a success or a key player in that side by barca fans and he certainly wasn’t incredible for a few seasons like you said.
