A FIANNA FĆ”il TD has hit out at the āmob-type frenzyā that has led colleagues to give up their ministerial pensions and said if it continues, politicians will be left with āvery basic levelā earnings.
Jim McDaid, whose DĆ”il salary is ā¬98,424, is one of the last remaining TDs retaining his ministerial pension, worth a separate ā¬22,487 a year, and insisted last night he will not be giving it up.
"People are in a mob-type frenzy and politiciansā attitude is that where the mob goes, they must follow.
āIf we are reacting to this mob-type frenzy now, it will continue until we are brought down to a basic level and that will result in only the very wealthy entering political office.ā
He said his pension is worth only ā¬425 a fortnight: āThankfully Iām not in a situation where Iām dependant on the money but at the end of the day itās a matter of principle.ā He said pensions were awarded for genuine reasons, including to keep former ministers from being āhead-huntedā by the private sector and to āalleviate corruptionā.

Only the very wealthy will be interested in gaining political power if theyāre not getting a ā¬100,000 annual salary
