“We look forward to working with officials from the department to progress the works covered under this grant. These works are an integral part our Master Plan for the Showgrounds, and with funding allocations under the Large Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund (LSSIF) expected shortly, these are very exciting times for the Sligo Rovers community as we aim to deliver a modern multi-sports stadium in the lead up to our Centenary celebrations in 2028.”

Wexford also added in a statement: “Wexford FC prides itself on its grassroots approach and connection with the local community, and this funding will help provide high-level sporting facilities for clubs right across Wexford.”

First Division side Kerry FC will also be in line for a grant of €387,953, which they say will enhance facilities at their home of Mounthawk Park. In a further boost, the club say that the €52,738 sum awarded to the Kerry District League will also go towards the Tralee stadium, with the club in its second year in existence.

“This is fantastic news for everyone involved in Kerry soccer and in Kerry FC,” said club general manager Sean O’Keeffe.

"A lot of hard work goes into grant applications in the background but when you see the reward it makes it all worthwhile. We are looking forward to further enhancing the grounds in Mounthawk Park which will improve the match-going experience for our supporters and players”

“The record funding being announced today under the Community Sport Facilities Fund underlines this Government’s continued commitment to seeing Irish sport thrive into the future,” added TD Thomas Byrne, Minister of State for Sport, Physical Education and the Gaeltacht.

Grant applications by Bray Wanderers for work at the Carlisle Grounds and also at their training facility at Ballycorus, Peamount for facility improvements, Galway United - who were looking to fund gym equipment and safety & training equipment and Shelbourne FC’s academy for an astro pitch were declared invalid by Department officials, meaning they fell short of the criteria.

The FAI thanked the Government for today’s record funding announcement, with a figure of €45.8 million going towards soccer projects across the country - up a whopping 82pc from 2020.

The association has secured €2,004,17 in funding for seven national projects including the Nationwide Dugout Upgrade Scheme, FAI National Centre CCTV & Video Analysis Upgrade, LOI Pitch Testing Kits and the Nationwide Schools Football Scheme, while local clubs like Moneygall FC (€133,923), Mullingar Athletic (€358,310) and Westport United (€151,940) have also been granted funding among others.

“I’d like to extend my thanks to the Ministers and all members of government who’ve supported and backed Irish football today with this increased funding,” said FAI interim CEO David Courell.
