Ex-Swiss guard complains of sexual advances in Vatican
For almost 500 years, young men from all over Switzerland have made the trek to Rome to guard the pope as Swiss guards.
Now a former member of the elite division has revealed that, besides protecting the pontiff, he spent his two years in the Vatican rebuffing unwanted sexual advances from priests, bishops and even a high-ranking cardinal.
The unnamed guard told a Swiss newspaper that he was the subject of 20 “unambiguous sexual requests”.
“One night, after midnight, I received a call on my mobile phone,” said the former guard in the interview. “The person on the other end said he was a cardinal and he asked me to come to his room.”
On another occasion the guard, who said he served during the papacy of Pope John Paul II, found a bottle of whiskey outside his door alongside the calling card of an influential bishop.
He recalled a dinner with a priest in a Rome restaurant that took an unexpected turn.
“As the spinach and steak were served, the priest said to me: ‘And you are the dessert’,” recalled the ex-guard, saying he stood up and left without touching his food. When the guard complained about the incident to his superior in the guard, he said he was told that, as he spoke no Italian, he had clearly misunderstood the priest’s intentions.
RumoursWhen the time came for him to leave the Vatican, and the ex-guard intended to apply for a job in the Vatican, he was told to meet an unnamed bishop but to “have a shower beforehand”.
Mr Urs Breitenmoser, a guard spokesman, told the Swiss newspaper that the rumours were of no interest and that guards occupied themselves with “very different matters” during their two-year service.
The Swiss Guard were founded in 1506 by Pope Julius II. Members must be unmarried Swiss men between the ages of 19 and 30 and of “good moral ethical background”.
Signing in, it’s gone
Iggy making headlines again, says he’ll vote yes in the same sex marriage referendum.
And so begins the slow decline of Catholic Ireland
It’s only beginning now? This’ll come as a shock to many.
I’m searching for something to devote a bit of spiritual practice to at the moment.
Can anyone help?
Have you considered the Kult of Klopp?
Already a member - thanks.
Have you read the blueprint for educate together secondary schools? I like the philosophy I must admit.
Meditation pal… take the parts of Buddhism you like and apply it.
No…
I’ve been there bro.
And while I really dig pieces of of it, I can’t really grasp it I have to say.
Ha good one mate
Because you cant let go mate … not many of us can, the western way of thinking is hard to relinquish - it’s a very me way of living — even our religions are very selfish - god is here to answer our prayers/ has a purpose for us etc. etc … Buddhism is about giving up the self / ego.
A lot of voluntary schools talk a good game about inclusivity but when you scratch beneath the surface, the reality is much different.
I could write a book on this stuff mate, as you undoubtedly could do also.
I don’t like this quite militant anti ego/self sentiment that is expressed by Buddhist type followers. Why are we anti aspects of our very nature? Also what happens then to our pleasant feelings that make life so worthwhile? I have tried staring at a flower for 10 minutes but I must say I am not blown away.
And life isn’t as simple as just discarding big bad ego. It is much more complicated than that.
Good article here. Moderation is the key.
It’s more about letting go of attachment really … to realize everything is part of the whole and clinging to , ego / material wealth / possessions will never bring real happiness … that’s the crux of it. You can still enjoy nice things / money / pleasant feelings - it’s about not letting these things rule you … that’s it in its most basic … and it’s not about living like a robot or that you’ll suddenly wake up with no desire for any of these things — that’s what meditation is about - you use it to pull back a bit and see what’s truly important… not sure about staring at a flower — you should be using it to clear your mind initially , even shutting your mind off from your thoughts for 2 mins is brilliant… but the goal should be about using it to give you a different perspective on how you are living or how you handled a certain situation… but that’s more advanced really.
