I thought we were rid of Burley when Setanta went tits up. In fact, it was one of the few positives I was taking from the situation. At least he’s confined to the studio on ESPN. I very rarely watch the panels on any station now, most of them are boring or talk utter shite or both. So I can pretty much avoid Burley now. However, you can’t ignore the co-commentator, so Macari continues to irritate. Not much to add on him to what has already been said here. He might be the thickest man on television (any subject, not just sport).

I thought I was rid of Burley moving to NZ but they wheel him out on ESPN Oz/NZ every now and then. This guy is a fierce cunt too. Some accent on him:

Forgot to mention having to put up with such luminaries as Robbie Mustoe and Shaka Hislop as co-commentators is grating too

So Burley’s been given studio duties for EPL - Christ. As Rocko says, some of us SPL watchers have to put up with him co-commentating. He made a comment before Christmas about how fans of smaller clubs were pathetic in that they were so obsessed with Celtic and Rangers they generally spent most of the games against either of them roaring at the opposing supporters and barely watching the game. A week or so later Celtic were at St Mirren and a raft of their supporters spent most of the game facing the gantry, pointing up at Burley and chanting abuse at him. It was coming up clearly on the coverage and the main commentator was apologising for the choice language every now and then. The cut and thrust of Scottish football, he called it. Burley himself was disgusted by the whole carry one.

Pat Dolan is about as bad as it gets for me.

He was going nuts about Jaime O’Hara declaring for Ireland. When it was put to him that, a player he admires (apparently) Deco is Brazilian and plays for Portugal, his response was:

‘WE’RE IRISH THOUGH. WE WEAR THE GREEN JERSEY’

…in his best English accent.

He also went nuts about Irish Journalists asking Obama about his Irish roots - ‘who ever asked Paul Osan about his Irish roots’ was his reponse.

I think Pat speaks a fair amount of sense. He talks shite the odd time.

I see a mention on one of the earlier posts from a couple of years ago of ‘Des’ - I’d forgotten Des Curran existed; he was Lou’s partner on Setanta up until a year or two back. Anyone know where his career took him?

On the moan, moan, moan point…that was a feature of Ray Houghton’s co-commentary that used to really irritate me but I think he’s improved beyond all recognition in the past while. Lou Macari is just a dickhead.

When you realise just how negative he is it starts getting funny. Between that and him making up his mind about the game 30 mins in and ignoring what is happening after that it’s quite hilarious. Bilbao were never in the game, were thoroughly outclassed and were generally apalling. Despite the fact that for 30 minutes in the second half Bilbao were all over Madrid.
